Braga-Jazz-Walk-02

The first Braga Jazz Walk was a huge success. We got pretty amount of audience, and what make us happy is the fact that those are the kind of loud, happening crowds enjoying magnificent performances by the great young local talents. (Read the report here: http://jazzuality.com/jazz-event-report/braga-jazz-2013-the-report/). A new place brings new hope, we always believe so, and now we’re working hard to make more and more improvement in this twice a month event.

As you might have known, Braga Jazz Walk which is made by the cooperation of Jazzuality.com, Braga City Walk and KPH Music runs every Thursdays of the second and fourth week. In this event we feature 3 bands that leads to the open jam session. Everyone can join in, no matter what genre they are into. Basically we’re cored in jazz, but we wish to stretch the boundaries wider, showing that jazz is not just the music style but can also be applied in the spirit and mentality of playing. We support the pure jazz musicians, but what’s also important is to find unique bands/musicians that have different music hybrids yet still strongly resonance jazz in its concept.

Since we are now in the second week of October, happy to announce that Braga Jazz Walk #02 is ready to roll. It’s going to be on Thursday, October 9, 2014 starting at 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm, served totally free.

Who will be featured in the Braga Jazz Walk #02? Let’s start with this one. There’s a theological term in Christianity that describes the symbolical relation between God and humanity called Imago Dei. The brief translation is “Image of God”, but this term is used to show how humans should reflect the image of God in their moral, spiritual and intellectual nature. How about in art or more specifically music? Well, there’s a band etablished on November 10, 2013 that uses this term as the name of their band. It’s called Imagodeo. By using this, the personnels wish to reflect God and send His love through their music and performance.

It all came from the unity of 5 boys and 1 girl that are deeply into music and already experienced as additional players in many bands and events. At first they used d’bakupolo as the name but on the Valentine’s Day this year they officially changed into Imagodeo following some changes in the lineup. This band is focusing on ‘Pop Soul’ by placing quality and harmony up front. The personnels are Andhika Caesar Sesa (Dhika) on vocal, Yohansa Ambarita (Yoan) on electric guitar, Dennise Natasha Inadea Mata Hine (Dea) on keyboard, Janoko Dewanto (Ojan) on bass, Engelberth Fredrick Watory (Engel) on acoustic guitar and Gerids Yanri Yulius on drums. They have performed quite often in Maranatha University’s events and reached Ruang Putih for Friday Lite Music. Now they are heading to Terraz Jazz to utilize their jazzy side. We have seen some of their videos in Gerid’s Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/user/JUNGLEBEAT90/videos) and found many interesting stuffs. If you love Soulful pop with jazz, blues, blues and a little rock, this band will meet your needs.

Next. Let’s take a look at a young male singer with unique characteristic voice. His name is Rizki Jonathan. As he’s been coming regularly to our regular event from the no longer existed Terraz Jazz, the still running Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) Jam to the first edition of Braga Jazz Walk, and he always joins the jam session whenever possible. Speaking of vocal character, he has gentle yet strong, bluesy, soulful and husky kind of voice that in a way reminds us of Sandhy Sondoro. Since he’s still young, we believe he still has more than enough time to climb to the top.

About two months ago we heard that he already has established a platform called Rizki Jonathan Project (RJP). According to Rizki, the group was officially established in August 23, 2014 and cored in pop rock with jazzy vibes. We have seen him so often in the jam session, but now we happily give him a shot in the showcase section. Joining him are his friends including Andre Fernando (guitar/backing vocal), Yosua Setiawan (bass), Farrel Yanaga (drums) and Chaerul Ahmad (saxophonist). If you fancy the kind of soulful, pop approach of current popular songs, make sure you won’t miss this one.

You might have known him, maybe you haven’t, but you really got to see this He’s been known as a dynamic and idealistic artist that places his feet on crossovers, from pop, reggae, blues and jazz. He sings, he dances, he plays instruments especially trumpet. A couple of years ago he made a hit single called “Sumitro Rojali” which uniquely made in two version, pop jazz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hKSVsfMRI0 and reggae https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgCy3kqm6hI , and quickly gained attention from music lovers. A highly gifted artist, cool, yet humble and friendly. He’s none other than Mr. Uye , the alias for Erwin Saz.

It’s not easy for him to find a stable ground in the industry, and certainly it took quite a long time. But he found the way to offer something trendy that suits the common ears without having to sacrifice his honesty and idealism. If you listen to his very popular “Sumitro Rojali” and whatever song he sings/plays, you will clearly feel it. Plus, you will find colorful dimensions created by crossovers of genres that feels natural. He plays what he like, he doesn’t care about any specific genre. What’s important is for us to enjoy his performance and have fun together with him, the rest won’t matter to him.

For this gig Mr Uye will be accompanied by heavy artillery including Nissan Fortz (guitar), Dede SP (bass) and Danny (drums). Nissan is known as one of the frontmen of Blues movement in Bandung and half of the famous duo Sarah N Soul, while Dede SP is a blues/rock bassist active in West Java Syndicate among other bands and highly capable in playing many other genres from jazz to Sundanese traditional music.

This man is good, no doubt about it. But for us, he’s an example of a fine artist that know how to use variety of music styles, sounds or even disciplines to create a tasty dish for everyone. Since he’s going to release his second album really soon (projected in November 2014), it’s going to be cool to hear some teasers directly from him. If you’re curious to hear how jazz would sound when placed altogether with reggae, blues, soul, rock and pop, let’s stand right in front of Erwin ‘Mr Uye’ Saz’s stage. Along with the heavy artillery, Mr. Uye will make you feel good. Uyee!

braga jazz walk, braga jazz walk 2, jazzuality event, jazzuality.com, braga city walk, kph music

The jam session as usual will be provided all the way to the end of the show. Everyone can join in. Other than two baby grand pianos and electronic drum provided by KPH Music, you can bring your own instruments and jump right in. No matter what your music bacground is, as long as you feel like jamming, the stage can be yours.

This event is brought to you free of charge. All you have to do is come to the Braga City Walk, go straight in until you find Giggle Box, and the stage stands right on its left side. In order to keep this event running we need your support. You can do that by simply come to each edition. While you get entertained by wide variations of jazz played by several bands, your present will help the process of regeneration and jazz socialization in Bandung.

BragaJazzWalk02

We scored another streak. After the crowded premiere edition, the Braga Jazz Walk #02 once again draws good number of audience. Held in the mall located at the historical Braga street named Braga City Walk, this second edition served something quite different than the menu on the previous one. This time it was about pop jazz, soul, and then the rare jazz flavored reggae with some blues, rock and pop delights. We believe by bringing in different styles we could introduce the rich variety of jazz towards the society as well as showing that jazz is indeed a genre that could fit everyone’s ears. Another important mission to accomplish is to make Braga City Walk a jazz spot/destination in Bandung. With the solid cooperation between us Jazzuality.com, the venue Braga City Walk and the kind-hearted music school KPH Music who provides the instruments and sounds plus the support of musicians in Bandung and the jazz fans who have been with us, we know we can make it happen.

BragaJazzWalk02-Imagodeo (6)

The event started 15 minutes after 7:00 pm with a band of Maranatha University student, Imagodeo. Since Imagodeo shows the intention to reflect the image of God in their nature, this band wishes to luminate it through their music and performance.

RAN & Tulus’ “Aku Bisa” was their first song that directly followed by Earth Wind and Fire’s “September”. After the happy groove they turned to ballad, this time with a big hit from Brian McKnight, “Back at One”. A song from Tulus’ second album titled “Satu Hari di Bulan Juni” with a piece of “When a Man Loves a Woman” being blended in the middle. Dewi ‘Dee’ Lestari’s “Malaikat Juga Tahu” which also sang by Glenn Fredly was the next choice. In this song Dhika showed everyone his deep, soulful vocal quality that reminds us of Glenn. Dhika has the kind of voice that perfectly suits the trend in our music industry today. It was beautiful, but they didn’t want to end their session in mellow tune, so they took everyone for one last joyride with Slank’s “Kamu Harus Pulang”.

BragaJazzWalk02-Imagodeo (7)

We have planned to bring them in for some months, but only until now we could find the time to have them for real. Well known songs, nicely executed with happy moods. This band would perfectly fit to run around the field of blues, jazz, groove, doo woop, traditional pop, soul, RnB and everything in between. An entertaining band it is. Well done, Imagodeo, keep reflecting the image of God in anything you do, especially in music!

BragaJazzWalk02-RizkiJonathanProject (7)

The second session was taken by a band, still two months old named Rizki Jonathan Project. This group is led by a young male singer Rizki Jonathan, whose vocal character has gentle yet strong, bluesy, soulful and husky that in a way reminds us of Sandhy Sondoro. He came to our event so often, almost in every edition and consistently joined the jam session. Since he already established a group, it’s about time to feature him up in the showcase session.

Andre Fernando (guitar/backing vocal), Felix Jose (guitar), Yosua Setiawan (bass), Farrel Yanaga (drums) and Chaerul Ahmad (saxophonist) stood alongside Rizki. Their session started in a duo between Jonathan and Andre. The song was “Amazing Grace”, brought acoustic and quickly bagged applauses. The whole band members then joined these two lads and brought nothing but popular songs including Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” and the most recent chart topper from the Canadian band Magic!, “Rude”. Then they went back to the past and covered one of Chrisye’s evergreens, “Kala Cinta Menggoda” and reached the end with a cool rearrangement of Michael Jackson’s “Man In the Mirror”.

BragaJazzWalk02-RizkiJonathanProject (1)

That’s Rizki Jonathan. Not only he could sing very well, he also has his own color in unique tone. Since he’s still very young, he still has a lot of time to fulfill his dream. With such gift he can make it to the top in the near future. We’d love to see him and his fellows grow on our stage. Hope he will keep jamming and take some more slots in the future.

BragaJazzWalk02-ErwinSaz (5)

The last performer was an artist who amazingly can enter the mainstream industry while still keeping his idealism attached. As long as people feel happy and have fun with him, then he’d accomplish his wish. Through quite long time of searching and trying, he found his magic formula that uniquely combines wide-array of music, from jazz, pop, soul to reggae. What’s great about his music is that you will find colorful dimensions created by crossovers of genres that feels natural. He is Erwin Saz a.k.a Mr. Uye.

As he’s finishing his new album (projected to release soon in November 2014), we were happy to be able to hijack him to share some teasers (as well as singing his hits of course) for this second edition. He was accompanied by heavy caliber (all-star cast) including Nissan Fortz (guitar), Dede (bass) and Dani Irjayana (drums).

We say it was a truly magnificent session that spoke loud about the multi-dimensional music concept, yet served really friendly and easy to absorb even by the most common listeners. And the entertainment factor is very high! All in all, they were playful and attractive throughout their almost an hour round.

BragaJazzWalk02-ErwinSaz (2)
The main team started first and directly surprised the audience by a jazzy version of Bob Marley’s “Waiting in Vain”. Well, it started with smooth jazz-reggae outfit, but then more and more flavors were added into the palette, from blues to country. Nissan Fortz performed like a wizard, totally riveting with his multi-color tones. Dede got the rock bassist style by holding his weapon down low yet the groove and notes were clearly went to jazz. Dani is no stranger to jazz drumming, but here he demonstrated an all-rounder beatings. The featured artist Erwin Saz didn’t just sing, he already sounded his trumpet and harp from this first song all the way to the very end.

Mr. Uye suddenly opened the jam session on the second song, his own hit “Sumitro Rojali”. Genta (blues harp), Hafidz (trumpet) and Estu (violin) quickly submitted themselves into the show. Again, this song became a free-for-all playing ground. They all had solo run and Nissan conducted the drum and bass to keep changing the musical layer, from Latin to blues to country folk. The audience were involved too, singing together with them. “Englishman In New York” was the next source to have fun. All kinds of genre floated in, including house music. Everyone sang again led by Mr. Uye himself. “Do you want to hear one more, or should we stop right here?” he said. Of course we wished to have more. Apparently he still had one last song in his mind. It was a famous song written by the late, legendary Batavian artiste, Benyamin S entitled “Nonton Bioskop”. Keroncong was pretty much alive in this one, especially through Estu’s violin.  They poured out every energy they had left for one last magical jam.

BragaJazzWalk02-ErwinSaz (11)

The whole show of Erwin Saz and friends was built under the concept of jam session. These guys turned the stage into a fun park where they could play around freely. An amazing, highly entertaining show was the result. Since the time was already too late, we had to cancel the open jam session in this edition. Many musicians came to jam, but we’re sure they understand. Not everyday we can have an ensemble like this. We can learn so many things from them. The concept building, the way to execute it, the good way to jam and of course, the entertainment factor. So X factor, WOW factor, or whatever you call it, Erwin ‘Mr.Uye’ Saz and his team mates have it. It was mad! Uye!

BragaJazzWalk02-Titbits (6)

The Braga Jazz Walk #02 turns out to be a fun edition. We got lots of groove, a lot of happy vibes, cheerful moods and tasty tunes. There were many cool covers of today’s hitlist, but there were also some originals that have strong potential to be succeed in the market. Many thanks to all the bands, the jam participants, our partners and of course to you all, gorgeous, happening crowds! We hope you enjoy this edition and keep supporting us in the next editions. Jazz belong to everyone and should be able to penetrate all segment of society. We bring our concept into the mall which is located in the middle of the historical Braga street in a wish to introduce the friendly face of jazz and its colorful varieties (and possibilities) to both devoted jazz fans and new/common listeners.

SerambiJazz2014-BennyLacknerTrio

It’s certainly good to see Goethe Institut‘s successful program Serambi Jazz‘ is being busy in the Indonesian jazz scene recently. The last show in Jakarta was two months ago, on August with Tuslah (the unique quartet of Riza Arzhad, Sri Hanuraga on piano, Adra Karim and Elfa Zulham) (http://jazzuality.com/jazz-events/serambi-jazz-2014-tuslah/). Normally we would wait until the next program in November since Serambi Jazz is a two monthly event, but for this year this program landed on two different cities: Yogyakarta and Surabaya in between the regular schedule. The Duo Project (Dhani Syah and Johanes Radianto) was in Yogyakarta in July (http://jazzuality.com/jazz-events/serambi-jazz-2014-duo-project-ramadhani-syah-warongan-johanes-radianto-yogyakarta/) and then Sketsa (in trio format with Gerald Situmorang, Dimas Wibisana and Andreas Arianto) visited Surabaya (http://jazzuality.com/jazz-event-report/serambi-jazz-2014-presents-sketsa-in-surabaya-the-report/). So not only Serambi Jazz’s wings spread wider, they have been flapping more too. So talk about penetrating Indonesia with good quality of jazz concert, this program has been doing remarkably well.

As we have entered the month of October, that means it’s about time to have the next regular schedule of Serambi Jazz. We have received the official announcement from Goethe Institut Jakarta, and it turns out to be special. For the November 2014 edition, Serambi Jazz is presenting a trio who place their feet on two cities, Berlin and New York. Led by the German-American pianist Benny Lackner, here comes a group of three formed about a decade ago in New York City, Benny Lackner Trio.

benny lackner, serambi jazz, jazzuality

Yes, it’s true that Benny Lackner’s group was build under a standard jazz trio formation, but their concept is anything but typical. The music is a combination of hard grooving beats, slow, atmospheric sounds and modern jazz. The balance of the composed music and improvisation holds a deep respect for the Jazz tradition and at the same time bringing out contemporary elements of modern music inspired by Radiohead as well as harmonic language inspired by composers such as Brahms and Chopin and Keith Jarrett. They refer their music to expressive jazz, that might be the good way to describe this multi-dimensional band. They decorate their music with slight electronic augmentation and drum programming, playing totally collective with each member plays an equal role inside. Together with drummer Matthieu Chazarenc and bassist Jerôme Regard, the trio establishes a new horizon of jazz unlike we have seen or heard before. Modern, groovy beating rhythm, artistic and utilizes both electronic and acoustic instruments can be found in their veins, something that they have started since 2002.

The unconventional interpretation of some diverse contemporary works of artists ranging from Jimi Hendrix, Prince, Björk, Feast to David Bowie has won more and more crowds everywhere they landed. But that’s not all, since they can fly their wings to reach wider lands by making surprisingly insightful arrangements of Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk and the Gershwins. Hey, we should add Brad Mehldau too, since Mehldau is actually, once, the private mentor of Lackner. By looking at these names you could get a slight hint of how diverse this group is in their play. But of course they have their own original songs which all can stand as their masterpiece. All of these stuffs are documented in their recordings such as “Sign of the Times” (2006), “Pilgrim” (2007), “Cachuma” (2012) and their brand-new 5th album, “Sisikiyou” (2014) that they are currently promoting by being on tour to Asia, Australia and New Zealand. The album Sisikiyou was recorded at the famous Jazzanova Studio in Berlin and features a modern, groove-oriented sound with electronic embellishments.

Jazz Times stated that their sound “is a direct result of the influence of the trios of Keith Jarrett, Ahmad Jamal, Brad Mehldau and Bill Evans.” From what we have seen in Benny Lackner Trio’s live recordings on Youtube, their repertoires are quite indescribable. We got something different from each videos, where highlight can be found in every tune. They could play bluesy, sophisticated like Norah Jones, but on the other hand they can go wild and challenging by performing the progressive jazz/rock even reaching out to touch the experimental. No matter what or how they play, the manouvers are stunning, as if they want to catch you off-guard through each played material.

Benny Lackner Trio was here in 2011 brought by @America and Beyond Production. For this 5th album promo Asia-Australia-New Zealand tour, the bass position is given to Paul Kleber. Special for the trip to Indonesia, two Indonesian musicians are featured too. They are keyboardist Azfansadra (Adra) Karim and guitarist Johanes Radianto. Both of these considerably young but highly skilled musicians got their master degrees in Netherlands. It’s going to be interesting to see how these lads would reinforce the Benny Lackner Trio and create even richer tones and possibilities than ever.

Now let’s see the profile of each member.

This won’t be his first trip to Indonesia since he was here last year accompanying Kai Brückner in a mind-bending encounter with Riza Arshad Project on April 2013. http://jazzuality.com/jazz-event-report/serambi-jazz-kai-bruckner-and-riza-arshad-project-the-report/. He is a very effective player while assisting his team mates, but once being given a space, he will float merrily on the surface.

SerambiJazz-BennyLacknerTrio-2014

Serambi Jazz hasn’t visited Bandung for quite some times. So now that the program landed again in the Parahyangan soil, the jazz aficionados should be excited. It was a 5 star quality concert with very interesting collaboration between a group who’s been placing its feet on Berlin and New York, and two of the best Indonesian musicians from younger generation. Representing Europe is a group formed more than a decade ago in New York, Benny Lackner Trio. This trio is led by the German-American pianist Benny Lackner, who’s been known as one of the most successful students of Brad Mehldau.

The trio came for an Asia, Australia and New Zealand tour in order to promote their 5th album, “Sisikiyou” which was recorded at the famous Jazzanova Studio in Berlin. For this tour Benny Lackner is accompanied by drummer Matthieu Chazarenc and bassist Paul Philipp Kleber. Speaking of Paul, we have been wowed by his mastery play last year when he came with Kai Brückner for a mind-bending encounter with Riza Arshad Project on April 2013. http://jazzuality.com/jazz-event-report/serambi-jazz-kai-bruckner-and-riza-arshad-project-the-report/. If this trio is already stunning, the collaboration with two of considerably young but highly skilled musicians got their master degrees in Netherlands: Johanes Radianto (guitar) and Adra Karim (keyboard/B3 organ).

Serambi Jazz 2014-BennyLacknerTrio (12)

We attended the Bandung gig on October 15, 2014 which took place at the historical hall of ITB, the Aula Barat (West Hall). There were lots of things going down in this particular spot in the 70’s when it comes to the history of jazz in Bandung. So placing such classy concert like this in this building created some kind of different atmosphere to the already fully spirited one.

The concert started right after the welcome speech from ITB, Mrs Sulastri and Riza Arshad. Lackner began with glittery solo piano as the opening of soft, smooth with David Bowie’s “Cygnet Committe.” Adra Karim joined them shortly after to play “Pianohaus”, a song listed in their 2012 album, “Chacuma”. The beauty of free jazz shone from them where both piano and keyboard collided yet they went on harmoniously.

Serambi Jazz 2014-BennyLacknerTrio (20)

Let’s get a little bit deeper with Benny Lackner Trio. This group was build under a standard jazz trio formation, but their concept is anything but typical. Their music is like the combination of hard grooving beats, slow, atmospheric sounds and modern jazz. The balance of the composed music and improvisation contains a deep respect for the Jazz tradition but at the same time bringing out contemporary elements of modern music which can be inspired by Radiohead as well as harmonic language inspired by composers such as Brahms and Chopin and Keith Jarrett. You can only imagine the wideness of their coverage musical area.

In a way, you can say that their music resonances the expressive jazz. They decorate their music with slight electronic that spiced the acoustic sound with subtle electronics by utilizing organ like  the Nord that’s being used in this concert. The team marched on playing totally collective with each member plays an equal role inside. Modern, groovy beating rhythm, artistic and in their veins, you can find the fine electrocoustic feel.

So far they had formed a quartet at the West Hall of ITB.  Johanes Radianto expanded the formation to quintet. “Name Dropper” arrived in fair fusion style. They went dreamy in the next song, not too long but enough to share a lot of feelings. Benny and Paul left the stage and a new organ trio was formed between Adra, Johanes and Matthieu. A warm swingin’ straightahead became a base for them to play around. That include, a cool 8-bar trading.

Lackner and Kleber came back again to play a song from their new album titled “Heartracer”. Heartbeating, heartpounding, and certainly, heartracing that was kept intense and sharp.

“A Park” brought them back to the beautifully build melodical structure. Next they played Adra’s composition titled “It Hurts A Bit” that created the wonderland atmosphere.

Serambi Jazz 2014-BennyLacknerTrio (10)

The unconventional interpretation of some diverse contemporary works of artists ranging from Jimi Hendrix, Prince, Björk, Feast to David Bowie has won more and more crowds everywhere they landed. But that’s not all, since they can fly their wings to reach wider lands by making surprisingly insightful arrangements of Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk and the Gershwins. and of course Benny’s former private mentor Brad Mehldau who openly stated his compliment to Benny.

The variation and combination between interesting covers and originals can be found in their collections like “Not the Same” (2003), “Sign of the Times” (2006), “Pilgrim” (2007) and “Cachuma” (2012). In the brand-new 5th album “Sisikiyou” they continue to feature a modern, groove-oriented sound with electronic embellishments. Funky, but full with twisting techniques that can only be done by highly skilled players like these lads.

Serambi Jazz 2014-BennyLacknerTrio (13)

Anyway, let’s go back to the concert. It was already late, close to 10 pm. As much as we loved the concert, they have reached the end of the line with Jimi Hendrix’s song “If Six Was Nine” which appeared in their 2003 album, “Not the Same”. This composition still built under the blues taste but also played within augmented and chromatic scales. Kleber gave one bluesy solo run in this one. The intensity created a perfect climax. It was clean and tight!

ITB handed each of them batik syal and tote bag as they finished the concert. But apparently the audience didn’t want to let them go. Under the ‘we want more’ chants and claps, they came back again to play Indonesian traditional folk song “Gundul-Gundul Pacul” where the improvisation interestingly locked in one chord. Huge applauses was given to them in big respect.

Serambi Jazz 2014-BennyLacknerTrio (18)

Unlike before, for the first time Serambi Jazz served an open jam session. Three players from ITB Jazz including Hajar AS (guitar) and the current coordinator in chief Hizkia Natanael (bass) came onto the stage and had a fun jam with Lackner. Only one song with one set of players, then it was wrapped.

Once again Serambi Jazz delivered a very, very nutricious jazz concert where people can be entertained and learned altogether at the same time. You don’t have to be a jazz expert to enjoy this concert, but if you’re a hardcored jazz fans, you should really take this one as brilliant. Technically they maximize the richness of Blues, Ionian, Chromatic, Augmented and Diminished scales, but let’s put it simple: they appeared like 5 architectures working together in building a beautiful, monumental masterpiece. Slowly constructed each composition to stand tall and ellegant.

Jazzmen from two different part of the spheres collided in perfect harmony. Not that they have played together for many years, they have even just met a couple of days ago, only practicing twice, yet they  amazingly created one peaceful and harmonious collaboration with deep mutual understanding to one another. “Yes, it was the very first time for me to play with them, but it seems easy for me to connect with the boys. I guess, one of the reasons is because they are very kind and friendly.” said Johanes to us after the concert.

Serambi Jazz 2014-BennyLacknerTrio (17)

We send our highest appreciation to Benny Lackner, Matthieu Chazarenc, Paul Kleber, Johanes Radianto and Adra Karim, also to everyone behind the Serambi Jazz and Goethe Institut. Hope you read this article early, because the next gig will be in Jakarta today at GoetheHaus Jakarta (on October 16,2014). If you are in Jakarta, seriously don’t miss this one. Something like this goes for free, and you miss it, it’s really not a smart thing to do, right? Well, hope you have the time to catch it and enjoy this one as we did.

Braga Jazz Walk 03

Is it possible to make Braga Jazz Walk – a regular event  that’s been held regularly inside  a mall in Braga street named Braga City Walk —  stand as one of the jazz destinations in Bandung? That’s the wish of Braga City Walk that we have to answer. We believe it can happen. If we keep on doing it on regular basis and cook every edition with rich flavors and varieties, one day Braga Jazz Walk will be a favorite jazz spot for everyone who are in Bandung.

While we are working on it, here comes the third edition of Braga Jazz Walk. Three bands to blast the showcase session and an open jam session will provide more than enough space to party for every musician who come over. Free to watch, free to jam, free to have jazzy fun. Together with the venue Braga City Walk and KPH Music, we Jazzuality.com are trying the best we can to introduce the wide variety of jazz colors to the society.

Let’s see the performing bands. First, say hi to a band originally from Sukabumi, a city in West Java, located about 80 km south of Jakarta. The band is AllVoices. This band is definitely not a newbie since they were formed three years ago when the personnels were still in highschool.  Today the personnels stay in different cities. Some of them are still in Sukabumi, some are in Jakarta and some are in Bandung.  Amazingly, they’re still able to keep the band on.

We first knew them as one of the Kampoeng Jazz Band Auditions. They won and got the shot to play at the main event. But that’s not the only big event they were in, because they have also participated at the Tangsel Jazz Festival and Ramadhan Jazz Festival just to mention a few. AllVoices consists of Boy Hylmy and Simplicity (vocals), Dori wirawan and Trisna Wiguna (guitars), Yudansyah (bass), Elko Nurul (keyboard), Aldi (sax), Rizfan Zulkifli (percussion) and Puji Belmanda (drums). Pop jazz/Groove is their thing. The existance of AllVoices proves that Jazz is indeed alive in Sukabumi. We are happy and excited to have a jazz-oriented band from Sukabumi. Let’s give them a warm welcome by coming and supporting them.

braga jazz walk, braga city walk, lumiere, allvoices, opik bape, agis kania, swing, soul swing

Lumiere is a French word means “Light”. Or, maybe you will refer this word to the Disney character found in Beauty and the Beast — a candle with a French accent. Now, here’s a band from Bandung that has it as a name. The band’s like two bands melt as one, a blend between Out of 7 and Final Script. Hendike (saxophone), Widiyanto Sutanto (keyboard), Marissa Wiguna (drums), Robert Daniel (bass), Daniel Christy (guitar) and Gerry (vocal) established Lumiere just some months ago in June 2014, but they do move fast. So far they have one recorded track that they promised to let us hear in this gig. Hendike is currently working on his solo project and already has his materials. Well, shine the light on, Lumiere. Make the stage bright with your jazz bites.

One question: can duo make an impact in the midst of mainstream’s requirement of full (sized) band and lots of singers? We say yes, a duo definitely can! True, it won’t be easy since the two players have to work harder to fill up the empty spaces and to make a composition stands just as good as being played by full team, but once they find the way, they can shine as bright, or even brighter.

Just a couple of weeks ago Klab Jazz highlighted this ‘smallest’ collaborative work of musical pairing into a grand Duo Tone concert http://jazzuality.com/jazz-events/duo-tone/.  Klab Jazz selected/initiated the birth of 4 standout duos that have their own killing punches. We hope to be able to invite each and every one of them, but hey, let’s start first with a premium combination of Soul and Swing courtesy of Agis Bape.

This is a slice of a ‘small’ group that plays French Gypsy Jazz, Satura ft Agis Kania. This time two members from this group: Agis Kania and Opik Bape will go deeper into Soul Jazz. This is a good choice since Agis has a strong, 5-star soulful vocal character while Opik is a fine swing guitarist that would have been a huge success had he be born 80-90 years ago, in Paris or Chicago. Step aside from the Django Reinhardt’s style that Satura is into, Agis and Opik will definitely give something tight, clean and connected. You can expect some monumental works of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Etta James and the likes to appear from their show. If you like the kind of musics that grow in between the field of Soul, Jazz and Swing, the songs from the Billie Holiday, Etta James to Motown, you really got to see Agis and Opik. Just two of them, but they will wow you. No doubt about it.

braga jazz walk, braga city walk, jazzuality event, bandung jazz community, indonesian jazz

In any of Braga Jazz Walk you can have the jazztertainment, relaxing hours while hanging out with friends and families without having to pay even a penny. But that’s not it, because this event can always be a good source of training ground and jazzpression. You can express your soul and train yourself to deal and interact with other players (especially those you didn’t know before) on stage. The jam session is totally open for any musicians. Bring your own gear and swim with other sharks.

All said. Calling all jazz lovers, music students and everyone who are looking for a jazzy entertainment to support this event and the performing musicians. No charge once so ever, so it costs nothing but many to gain. Groovy pop jazz, funky fusion and soul swing are ready to blow your mind. All come to you this Thursday, October 23, 2014. See you there.

BragaJazzWalk3

Just a couple of days ago Indonesia officially has a new President. Joko Widodo, better known as Jokowi took his oath on Monday, October 20, 2014. As TIME magazine put him in the cover with “A New Hope” as the title, the music people now can hope for a better future, simply because for the first time this nation has a President who’s really a music fan, especially metal. Moreover, many times in his campaigns he affirmed commitment to support the creative economy. He’s only just begun, so let’s hope for the best.

Enough of the introduction, let’s get down to business. We scored another goal. A hattrick. Yes, we’re happy with the result of Braga Jazz Walk, 3rd edition. Speaking of variety we got Soul-Blues-Swing, Funky Fusion, Hard Bop and Groovy Pop Jazz among some other jazz corners that appeared here and there in smaller amount. Since all performers did their thing really well, this edition was filled with joy. Happy, tapping feet, smile, cheer, claps were all over the venue throughout the show.

Braga Jazz Walk 3 - Titbits (4)

Braga Jazz Walk is a two weekly event (on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month) that’s created by Jazzuality.com in full cooperation with Braga City Walk and KPH Music. We wish to (re)introduce the rich varieties of jazz to the society especially the music lovers who live in the same city, Bandung. Through this regular event we wish to push the regeneration much forward by providing reliable ground for them to gain experience, make themselves heard and try their music in front of real audience. At the same time we believe this event will give good entertainment to everyone watching. Thus, this is an edutainment program that hopefully can give benefit to the jazz development.

Braga Jazz Walk 3 - AllVoices (4)

AllVoices was the first to begin with. This band was established 3 years ago when the personnels were still in high school in Sukabumi, West Java. In pursuing the education, they have to be scattered in three different cities: Bandung, Jakarta and Sukabumi. But amazingly the band was still well kept. They even still manage to have regular practice in their hometown. Talk about passion and commitment, they really have it.

AllVoices appeared in full team with Boy Hylmy and Simplicity (vocals), Dori wirawan and Trisna Wiguna (guitars), Yudansyah (bass), Elko Nurul (keyboard), Aldi (sax), Rizfan Zulkifli (percussion) and Puji Belmanda (drums). Right after the whole team arrived at Braga City Walk, AllVoices heated up the audience right from the start with Reza’s “Berharap tak Berpisah”. The second song was the posthumous hit of Michael Jackson with Justin Timberlake, “Love Never Felt So Good”. But interestingly, they taylored the song in mid tempo smooth jazz, not the original breezy disco confection. Brave attempt but it paid off.

Still with smooth jazz, the Dewa 19’s hit “Pupus” took us into even more melancholy night. Rizfan changed his gear to flute that gave richer layer to the song. For the last song they went upbeat, this time with the cool rearrangement of GIGI’s “Nakal”.

Braga Jazz Walk 3 - AllVoices (1)

Just in 2014 alone they have performed in three prestigious stages: Kampoeng Jazz 2014 (as the winner of Band Auditions), Ramadhan Jazz Festival and Tangsel Jazz Festival. A fruitful year it’s been, and we’re just proud to be able to invite them. Fresh, groovy pop jazz like this are always perfect to capture the mall-goers, especially when it’s well executed by a band like this. As an evidence, we got good amount of crowds right from the start.

AllVoices is a solid proof that jazz has been growing very well in Sukabumi. From them we got the info that Sukabumi already has a jazz community called “Ngajazz”. We’re happy to know it. May there be more jazz bands from this particular city in Braga Jazz Walk. Thank you for coming and playing, AllVoices, hope to see you again.

Braga Jazz Walk 3 - Lumiere (6)

Time to check out the ‘Light’, a direct translation of the name of the next band, Lumiere. Established by a bunch of friends: Hendike (saxophone), Widiyanto Sutanto (keyboard), Marissa Wiguna (drums), Robert Daniel (bass), Daniel Christy (guitar) and Gerry (vocal) in June 2014, this band move quite fast by already has one recorded track from their original materials. Speaking of the composition of players, Lumiere is like a marriage between two bands: Out of 7 and Final Script. We know the great talents behind this band and expected something tight from them. Did we get it from them? Absolutely.

A package of funky hard bop was served as the opening with Herbie Hancock’s “Chameleon”. Massive funk-attack were thrown from the stage by them. After this instrumental track, Gerry joined the musicians to sing their original song, “Tak Terkalahkan”. Benjamin S’ “Nonton Bioskop” got a groovy, fusion suit and then they sealed up high with Daniel Christy’s favorite pick, “Night Rhythms”. Solo runs, tradings, call and response and improvisations were all over each song. It was tight!

Braga Jazz Walk 3 - Lumiere (7)

Powerful in every line, we should say. Infectious monster groove from the bassman, the colorful beat from the lady drummer, sharp jazz-rock guitar, the stunning improvisation on the piano and funky boppin’ sax were merry like a multi-colored Christmas light bulbs. By the addition of RnB male vocalist, Lumiere should shine even brighter. Still 4 months old, but with this kind of players the band can really go far, no doubt about it.

Braga Jazz Walk 3 - Agis Bape (3)

The mainstream industry in Indonesia today tend to go more into big sized band plus the amount of singers that is never enough. If that’s the reference, the young musicians would think that the big sized is the only way for them to succeed. Because of that, while we are dealing with the regeneration process, we have to push the establishment of smaller format, all the way to duo or even solo. As we have showcased the duos and solos a couple of times in the old Terraz Jazz, Klab Jazz moved towards the same point, even further by making up a Duo Tone concert. Four duos plus one special performance by Sarah N Soul for us became an important agenda not only to keep the music scene full of variety, but also as a reminder that a duo can be good too if not even better.

So here, we invited one of the four duos and placed them as the final show: Agis Bape, the collaborative project between the powerhouse soul sister Agis Kania teamed up with swingin’ guitar sensation Opik Bape. They have worked together for quite some time, especially in the French Gypsy Swing/Jazz Manouche group Satura. In Satura there are two guitarists and two vocalists, this time it’s like being cut in half. By going smaller, these two artists are able to focus on their forte which creates a unique blend between soul and swing.

Agis has a strong, 5-star soulful vocal character while Opik is a fine swing guitarist that would have been a huge success had he be born 80-90 years ago, either in Paris or Chicago. With that kind of hat, Opik got even stronger spirit and look cooler. They began sailing with Stevie Wonder’s “I Wish”. Agis showed how strong she could sing as well as demonstrating a voice with character. Then she went back all the way to the mid 30’s with a jazzy blues blast from the past, “Why Don’t You Do Right”. If the 30’s sounds too far, this song was sung by Jessica Rabbit character in the trailblazing combination of animation and live-action from 1988 movie, “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”.

Braga Jazz Walk 3 - Agis Bape (7)

Etta James’ “Fool that I Am” served deep before they revisited Motown with Marvin Gaye’s “Inner City Blues”. Agis’ all time fav “Change The World” originally by Eric Clapton became the last meal. Not an easy song to sing since one has to have the ‘it’ factor other than top-notch singing/guitar playing quality, but these two folks have it all. What a way to end a show.

Just two of them, but look at the music they produced. It felt fully round and deep, not flat and has no blank spots. Players in a duo have to know their own role and be connected fully to each other. In our opinion, Agis Kania and Opik Bape is definitely one of the best pairings ever made in Indonesia and they should be able to march much further, if the industry still care of quality.

Braga Jazz Walk 3 - Nouveau Project

Before the jam session started, we gave a shot to a group of Telkom University students named Nouveau. They have been coming regularly but they haven’t got the slot just yet. We invited and let them play one song. They surprised us with a unique swingin’ cover of Pharell Williams’ “Happy”. They gave good shot. For sure you will see them again in even longer duration in one of the soon-coming editions.

Braga Jazz Walk 3 - Jam Session (1)

Then the jam session started. Billy (vocal), Andi Pramudito (drums), Robert Daniel (bass) and Nicodemus Horisson (piano) were there together with three guitarists: Daniel Christy, Jerry Gates and Thomas. Chick Corea’s “Spain” became their choice. A group photo session occured earlier since some of the players especially the AllVoices members from Sukabumi had to go home. But the “Spain” was back again right after the session and carried on up until the end.

Braga Jazz Walk 3 - Photo Session

Three groups, different sizes, multi flavors, plenty of highlights and so many cool rearrangements, these would be good enough to describe this third edition. It was filled with groovy tunes, funky chops, jazzattack and classic/authentic swingin’, bluesy soul. With that range of variety, we hope the audience and mall-goers were entertained, while the coming musicians got something to look at. We thank everyone who have come and support us up until now. More to come in the next editions, so stay tuned and meanwhile, keep jazzin’.

BragaJazzWalk--Bragalicious

Music can accompany you through every single feeling and/or moment in your life, a good friend to be with whever you are, wherever you go, in any kind of activity. You listen to music while driving, you look for music to relax with, you share your sorrow, you go happy with it. Music would be perfect to accompany your dinner and beneficial in supporting any events. So now, think of this. Dinner, event/fest and music. Sounds good right? Well, that’s what you’re going to have this week.

The regular schedule of Braga Jazz Festival 3rd edition was just done last week. Normally we will be back again on the second Thursday of November. But since this week there’s a special culinary fest which will be served marathon from October 29th to November 2nd, 2014 called Bragalicious. To make this event merrier, Braga Jazz Walk will have a special edition as a part of (in a series of) Bragalicious Activities. So, jazz in a culinary fest? Why not. We are going to cook this one differently by presenting bands that in some ways may represent the spirit of Braga street from past to present. And of course, to fit the Bragalicious event.

First, let’s talk about a little history of Bandung for a while. The nickname “Parijs van Java” was given to Bandung for its resemblance to Paris and European atmosphere back at the colonial times. According to many historians, Bandung attained the nickname actually from what was going on in Braga Street in the 20s. At that time, this particular street was already happening. There were chic cafes, restaurants, boutiques, European art deco buildings and flowery scents around. That’s beautiful to imagine isn’t it? Now, what if we try to bring back the spirit in form of music, the music style from the 30’s era in Paris? The question is, is there any band who still play that vintage style? In Bandung? The answer is, yes there is! It’s SATURA.

satura, french jazz, gypsy jazz, jazz manouche, django reinhardt

Satura is a sensational acoustic guitar duo of Opik Bape and Dede Arief Ginanjar that most likely will be difficult to find anywhere else in Indonesia. Why? Because what they play is not just a simple acoustic jazz, but as we said, they dig something that reflects the beauty of jazz style originated in French around the 1930’s known as Gypsy Jazz or Jazz Manouche which many believed was invented by the phenomenal Django Reinhardt. Satura was formed not too long ago, but the souls of these dudes quickly submerged in this magical jazz style. The famous one among Romani guitarists who worked around Paris during the 30’s Django Reinhardt crafted the kind of music with traditional swing articulation but carried the then-popular Musette waltz with chromatic, mystical Gypsy flavor. Django has It’s still played by many musicians throughout the world, but it’s still rare to find in Indonesia, especially in Bandung. But now we have Satura who ressurects this authentic vintage aromatic floral scent of French Gypsy scene.

Often in Satura’s performance, the duo got empowered by one or two amazing female vocalists, Puspallia Panggabean and Agis Kania. Both of these young ladies are unbelievable in their own ways. magnificent, because they stand in between the old-soul and modern way of singing. While Puspall illuminates world class jazz vocals, Agis is a fine powerhouse soul sista. We just got Agis and Opik as a duo in last edition  ( Watch the video highlight here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6bx2nlKtls ) and now it’s time to have the boys of Satura with Puspall. A Parisien Gypsy Jazz in Parijs van Java? It’s going to be magic.

west java syndicate, jazzuality

Other than reflecting the vintage Paris or European scene, the street of Braga has also been known as the home of Sundanese traditional arts and cultures, including the music. Now here comes a unique unit that we think would be perfect to present this traditional Sundanese music-along with the exact spirit-by using the progressive jazz as the universal language: WEST JAVA SYNDICATE.

West Java Syndicate was born in 2010 by the drummer Zahar Mustilaq. This band combines two spheres, the Western jazz, blues and rock and Sundanese musical patterns. Along with YD Navis (keys) and Dede SP (bass) and on the other corner are Dosenk (kendang/flute) and the newest member, Randy Gevenk on woodwind section including tarumpet, karinding and bamboo flute, they open up a cross-dimensional music world that trancends anything you expect from music listening. They are playful, humorous and totally interactive. They do slapstick joke, they laugh, they are theatrical. But above all, they serve a cool invention by utilizing the skill and limitless creativity. As the result, you will have your mind bent. The rocktitude gamelan-based bass playing, the mod-trad drumming, the jazz-Sundanese piano sound and authentic sound from traditional instruments, all will knock you out.

One EP titled “Albeum Leutik” (Mini Album) is already out and available internationally through Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Albeum-Leutik-West-Java-Syndicate/dp/B00GKVDNIY and iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/west-java-syndicate/id740629021 and a full album is in the making. How far can music go along the path of complexity without losing its public altogether, by utilizing everything we have inside? Ask these guys about it, they will happily welcome you to listen to it yourself. A mad syndicate from West Java is going to redefine your music experience and entertaining pleasure.

For the young and trendy boys and girls out there, we have something for you. A groovy pop jazz from Padjadjaran University is going to glue you with jazzy rearrangement of well known songs. The band is SSP. SSP was established in February 2014. By having Suka Suka Project (As We Like Project) as a name, SSP shows that they don’t want to stuck only in one genre. Being able to explore their creativity freely is what they wish.

We met this band for the very first time when they competed in Kampoeng Jazz Band Auditions in 2014 and noticed the potential of them, both individually and as one team. 6 players are found inside: Jo (vocal), Ezra (keyboard), Fahmi (drum), Hiro (guitar), Rayan (bass) and Widi (saxophone). For two weekends they have conducted the jam session in KFC, Sukawangi Bandung. And now the boys continue their participation to Braga Jazz Walk. We invite SSP to accomodate the music taste of most young music listeners who you can easily find everytime you stroll down the Braga sidewalk.

Three bands, plus open jam session all the way to the end (if possible) will give more pleasure as you enjoy what Bragalicious is offering. We believe the sensation of tasting the delicious food and beverages would go up higher with live and exclusive jazz event. From Pop Jazz, retro French Gypsy Jazz to the Sundanese Ethnic Progressive Jazz, and so much more, are going to add more art into this 5-day of culinary fest. Since this Special Edition comes not in the regular schedule, please mark your calendar so you won’t miss it. Braga Jazz Walk, Live and Exclusive in a Series of Bragalicious Activities is brought to you by Jazzuality.com in full cooperation with Braga City Walk and KPH Music. See you.

BragaJazzWalk-Bragalicious

Braga City Walk is launching its new event called Bragalicious, a culinary festival for 5 straight days that’s planned to run a couple of times a year. If before there was Braga Culinary Night, now this concept is adopted by the Braga City Walk to facilitate the society’s needs of finding foods and beverages in variety, including the artistic aspects.

Braga Jazz Walk which was created by Jazzuality.com in full cooperation with Braga City Walk and KPH Music that has been running regularly every two weeks since last month. We are happy to be able to participate in the grand launching, supporting it with exclusive live jazz performances. We invited three bands as usual that pretty much represent the history of Braga street and the hang-out folks that are usually found along the sidewalk.

BragaJazzWalk-Bragalicious-SSP (6)

The first turn was given to a band of university students, SSP. Stands for Suka Suka (As We Like) Project, this Padjadjaran University students band choose to go free with style and genre. They don’t want to be trapped in any corner, instead they want to be able to explore free as a bird. Jo (vocal), Ezra (keyboard), Fahmi (drum), Hiro (guitar), Rayan (bass) and the brass section consists of Widi (saxophone), Rifky (trumpet) and Djani (trombone) are the personnels of SSP that serves joy through their groovy and chillin’ light jazz-oriented songs.

Having a brass section, what to bring? Well, they streamed fast and high directly, taking on Stevie Wonder’s “Superstitious”. Hiro’s written song, “Fantasi” took the lane of acid jazz bands like The Groove, catchy melody and lyrics that will have a success among the young music fans. After another groovy soul track from Eric Benét entitled “Spiritual Thang”, a ballad written also by Hiro titled “Terlambat” put us all in a mellow mood. Again, this song has the power to be a hit. If Tulus could do it with “Sewindu”, this one could too. Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” brought everyone safely back to the happy mood.

BragaJazzWalk-Bragalicious-SSP (7)

A band of campus students is always fun to watch. The youthful spirit, the playful mood in serving easy listening but ear catchy tunes. When we got a band like SSP, they have it all but also good skills in playing and rearranging the materials. Other than that they have original songs with strong potential that would do really well in the market. The combination of prime soulful male vocalist and highly capable musicians with the intention to share their happiness of playing music creates a warm atmosphere inside the Braga City Walk. What’s also great is that they brought loud, happening crowds too. We’re glad that SSP was here with us in this special edition.

BragaJazzWalk-Bragalicious-Satura-ft-PuspalliaPanggabean (4)

For the next group, let’s begin with one question. How could we bring ‘Parijs van Java’ – the nickname of Bandung-, into life? Well, music can do that. Not many bands in Indonesia play it, but there’s a duo that brings the reminiscence of Parijs van Java in their concept: SATURA. They bring back the Gypsy Swing to the surface, as if it was still the era of Django Reinhardt and the other Romani guitarists, Paris-circa 1930.

Satura was born not that long ago, but when you hear them play, it feels like they have been playing together for decades. What they play is a heavenly stuff with swing articulation that has the Musette waltz with chromatic Gypsy style. Many historians believe that this style was invented by Django Reinhardt and became his legendary signature playing style. This style is difficult to play, especially by two guitarists. But Opik and Arief are equipped with magic fingers and united soul. They can play at maximum speed without any problem. Clean, tight and sharp, perfect in harmony.

The evidence can already be traced right from the start. Who could ever thought they would start with “Flinstones”? Not just the theme, but also played in in cool Gypsy swing style. Huge applauses were given to them. Then they carried on with “Lady Be Good” and rose the musette swing even happier with “Tiger Rag”.

For tonight they got empowered by one of the female vocalists that they often feature, Puspallia Panggabean. Like having an old soul, she has a perfect jazz tone and articulation, wide vocal range and high singing technique. She’s a living songbook since she memorizes so many songs. She’s charming and has a sweet smile. What’s not to love about her? After last week we were wowed by Agis Kania, now Puspall did it in her own way.

BragaJazzWalk-Bragalicious-Satura-ft-PuspalliaPanggabean (7)

Puspallia Panggabean placed herself on stage to sing “Sweet Georgia Brown” that made us feel like enjoying the Parisien cafe in the 30’s.   “Bye Bye Blackbird” and “Bluesette” became their next presentation that made them bag even louder cheers from the crowd. For the last song they surprised everyone with one of Ismail Marzuki’s masterpiece, “Sersan Mayorku” brought in multi-modulation technique based on the version of Bandanaira. Very, very difficult, but they did it really well.

The nickname “Parijs van Java” was given to Bandung for its resemblance to Paris and European atmosphere back at the colonial times. According to many historians, Bandung attained the nickname actually from what was going on in Braga Street in the 20s. At that period, this particular street was already happening. There were chic cafes, restaurants, boutiques, European art deco buildings and flowery scents around. In year 2014 we thought it’d be nice to have the scene being captured in our mind. Thanks to Satura who ressurects this authentic vintage aromatic floral scent of French Gypsy scene, we could finally have it. C’était merveilleux! Merci Beaucoup.

BragaJazzWalk-Bragalicious-West Java Syndicate (5)

And now, it’s time to see the mindbending musicality from 3 mad-men. The personnels should be five persons, but for this event they could only come by three. What to do with two players defisit? This band proved they had no problem at all with it. It was still a hillarious show where a new musical dimension came alive through the collision between two worlds. Wait, we forget mentioning the band. It’s the one and only, WEST JAVA SYNDICATE.

West Java Syndicate came alive in 2010 by  Zahar Mustilaq, the drummer who actually live in between two spheres, the Sundanese traditional and the modern western music like jazz, blues, rock and so on. It didn’t take long for them to find the formula, but interestingly the personnels always love to explore and try new things, endlessly. Together with Yopi D Navis (keys) and Dede SP (bass), Dosenk (kendang/flute) and Randy Gevenk on woodwind section including tarumpet, karinding and bamboo flute, West Java Syndicate throws all the barricades to offer something unique. On the surface you might refer them as a band who plays Ethnic Progressive Jazz, but believe us when we say that they actually give more than just that.

From the very first song they already showed a high skilled-theatrical show. They were playful, humorous and totally interactive. The progressive ethnic was felt right from the first note with “Bubuka”. Then the folk song “Bajing Luncat” was delivered with wide room for improvisation.  What a surprise to see another traditional song “Manuk Dadali” got an electronica treatment and served theatrical.

BragaJazzWalk-Bragalicious-West Java Syndicate (6)

An original piece written by YD Navis titled “Tembang Katresna” (Love Song) was next. The last song was their first song, “Gending Rame ku Kendang”. “What we intend to say with this song is that kendang should have the same portion. Kendang can be a layer, it can do melodies as well.” said Zahar. The song is kendang-based composition, they didn’t have kendang player, yet they did really great in covering the loss. The solo bass in the middle was tight, and the other players poured the rest of energy they had left for an intense climax.

It was a mind-bending final act where the traditional Sundanese music got a rock and jazzitude treatment seamlessly. Acrobatic, entertaining, full of action, plenty of jokes, a ‘crazy’ package that amazingly served only by three fellows. Absolutely amazing.

BragaJazzWalk-Bragalicious-JamSession (4)

Jam session took place after that, and coincidentally it became one hot blues jam. The guitarist of Firewire Blues Galura Wirayudanto was on stage along with SSP drummer Fahmi and bassist Rayan. On keyboard was Nicodemus Horisson of Owcindful and Chakraborty, while the mike was taken by an alumni of Rising Star Indonesia, Andre Arizky. “Come Together” and “Route 66″ were their choices.

BragaJazzWalk-Bragalicious-JamSession (2)

Our MC Erick Gabe couldn’t help himself not to join. He did the scat singing and mouth trumpet along with the lineup. Then Danto moved to bass as a blues guitarist Idris took his place. Playing guitar and sing at the same time, Idris led the group towards the classic ballad lane with Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing”.

BragaJazzWalk-Bragalicious-PhotoGroup

Another batch came in with Joo Yang behind the drums, Klency Lembono on keyboard, Yosua Setiawan (bass) and the Indonesian Idol 2014 alumni Yesaya Pangeran Muda Siagian sang Beyonce’s “Love on Top”. Puspall who apparently loves this song joined the gang as the photo session took place. As the vocalists were able to fly up high with their vocal, the signature modulation was done spontaneously several times. We would love to see more, but we have to wrapped it up since it was already late.

BragaJazzWalk-Bragalicious-Titbits (4)

As the first-ever special edition of Braga Jazz Walk, we take this one as a beauty. And what makes us proud the most is the fact that it was carried by all-local bands that were all out to give a 5-star performance. Both Satura and West Java Syndicate should already have their career on international level based on their distinct/unique material, amazing skill and fine execution. They can really do it, we always believe so. As for SSP, this band of youngsters has been gaining more and more popularity among the UNPAD students that hopefully will bring them to the higher ground. Why not? They are entertaining, they have skills and they know what to do in cheering people up. And the jam session? It was hot and full of stars.

Bragalicious opens up a chance for everyone to enjoy the culinary festival. Plenty of food choices, variety of beverages from almost 50 brands/restaurants/cafes were found inside the modern-looking mall with art deco concept in the historical street, Braga City Walk. It’s also good to see that the programs of this mall are being integrated and supporting one another, and for us behind the Braga Jazz Walk, we’re happy to participate and hope this event contributed positively towards the success of it. May there be more edition to come, and if you ever need some jazz again in supporting the event from the entertainment side, count us in.

BragaJazzWalk-Bragalicious-Titbits (5)

Thank you very much to the musicians, the partners, supporters, the Bragalicious peeps and the audience. The next stop of Braga Jazz Walk will be on November 12, 2014. We have prepared three groups for it. Need some hints? There will be piano-drum duo project, a new but solid trio and a large-sized band that will remind you of young Kahitna. Curious? Stay tuned and don’t forget to come back in two weeks from now. We’ll be there to jazz you up.

37th-jgtc-2014

Prologue

1978 is the year when Jazz Goes to Campus was held for the very first time. At that time the students of Faculty of Economics from University of Indonesia got the idea to create art events not only about music, but also theater, painting, photography and some other art forms. During that era, jazz was already facing the stigma by being labeled as an expensice and exclusive music by many. Candra Darusman, -at that time still a faculty of economics student-, wanted to prove otherwise. He initiated the first ever Jazz Goes to Campus (JGTC) in late 1978, still in Salemba, with minimalist stage sets and ticket price only IDR 500. “But we got really great crowds. It was cool and familiar.” said Candra Darusman not long ago to us. The history proved that among those art events, only the JGTC managed to stand the test of time. Today this event proudly stands as the longest running annual jazz event in Indonesia and one of the oldest in the world (second to North Sea Jazz Festival). This year they are ready to back again with a mouth-watering lineup of artists. Let’s give it up for The 37th Jazz Goes to Campus!

The Ultimate Jazzperience

There are some interesting new movements being made by this year’s committee, which once again involves hundreds of current active students of Faculty of Economics from University of Indonesia (FEUI). First, they will be a Project called “Tribute to Salemba”, made by one of the playing artists in the first JGTC in 1978, Benny Likumahuwa with the initiator, Candra Darusman. This show will bring back all the memories and should be interesting since it will feature legendary names who were presented at that very first installment in Salemba. Therefore, the committee decided to use “Living the Inspired Jazzperience” as the theme which is focusing on “Inspired” and “Jazzperience”. “This year we wish to show our appreciation by presenting the senior jazz musicians that have given uncountable contributions in building up the jazz industry in Indonesia.” said the committee in the press release. In accordance to the theme, the 37th JGTC has “The Ultimate Jazzperience” as the tagline. This tagline pretty much shows their spirit in letting the audience feel the beautiful experience of enjoying jazz as well as ultimate satisfaction that can be felt by all this year’s stakeholders. “We are commited to give different jazz festival. We are going to bring variety of jazz musicians with balanced composition of senior and young ones. Other than that, “The Ultimate Jazzperience” should be able to represent the 37 years of our service.” said the committee. Not only celebrating the well known jazz musicians, Jazz Goes to Campus also aims to create a platform for young musicians to express their passion for jazz and exhibit their music talent throguh our very own JGTC competition.

The crowds of the 36th Jazz Goes to Campus (2013)

PRE-EVENTS

- Opening and Clinic

There are series of pre-event being held before the D-day. Starting with the JGTC Opening & Press Conference three days ago on October 31st, 2014 at Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia, Depok, a JGTC Clinic was made exclusive for the JGTC Competition’s contestants on November 2nd. Given by guitarist Agam Hamzah, drummer Rayendra Sunito, pianist Boby Limijaya and bassist Fajar Adi Nugroho, this clinic enhanced the technical aspects and an overview of how to become a good player in the industry.

- JGTC Competition

About the competition itself, this event is one of the most prestigious competitions that has created so many well-established musicians. The JGTC Competition belongs to JGTC Exhibiton along with the JGTC Choice Awards. The Qualification Round will run on 8-9 November 2014 at Tribeca Central Park, but that’s not all because for the first time will also be held in Surabaya. This will give easier opportunities to jazz bands/artists in Surabaya to be a part of the competition. The Surabaya Qualifying Round will take place at Area Danau Kampus C, Airlangga University, Surabaya on November 14, 2014.  I (Riandy Kurniawan) will be one of the judges with Benny Likumahuwa, Rayendra Sunito and Boy Rhunos (Surabaya only).

JGTC Roadshow is on schedule too. This year it will visit Surabaya in cooperation with Airlangga University’s students as a mini show on November 14, 2014 featuring ITS Jazz, Korek Jazz, C.Twosix Jazz Club, Fusion Jazz Community and special guest star Idang Rasjidi and the Syndicate.

- JGTC Scholarship

To show the Social Responsibility, JGTC is going to give scholarship to the FEUI students who need it. The fund raising is made through JGTC Gathering & Charity Night, inviting the donors and previous JGTC committees. This charity night is set to come on November 15, 2014 at Qi Dine and Lounge, Sultan Hotel Jakarta with a special appearance of a beautiful multi-talented lady who represented North Sumatra in Miss Indonesia pageant in 2013 that showed her ability in singing/songwriting, Yemima Hutapea.

- JGTC Community Night

To show our care towards the jazz communities in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi and Bandung, the JGTC Community Night will be held on November 21, 2014 at Airman Lounge, Sultan Hotel Jakarta. This Community Night is giving a platform for jazz communities in those areas to mingle and spread the love of jazz. Beben Jazz from Komunitas Jazz Kemayoran (KJK) and the living legend Benny Mustafa will be there as the guest stars.

- JGTC Choice Awards

This program has been running since 2007 in order to give the highest appreciation to those who have given enormous contribution to JGTC and to jazz development in Indonesia in general. This year the awards will be given to selected person in some categories such as Newcomer Artist, Most Dedicated, Young Talent, Album of The Year, dan Lifetime Achievement. The judges are Agus Basuni, Frans Sartono, David Karto, David Tarigan and Yance Manusama. These awards will be given at the main event.

- The Main Event

Now here comes the information you’re waiting for. The main event will be on Sunday, November 30, 2014 at Campus Ground FEUI, Depok. As for the lineup, the list are mouth-watering. The international artists are Sondre Lerche (Norway) and Ray Harris and the Fusion Experience (Scotland). We have covered Sondre Lerche’s show twice: at Java Jazz Festival 2011 and Kampoeng Jazz 2013, but this time surely he’ll highlight more of his new released album “Please”. As for Mr. wild keyboardist Ray Harris and the Fusion Experience, we watched his performance at JakJazz 2008 and still remember all the fun we had back then as if it was just yesterday.

Sondre Lerche at Kampoeng Jazz 2013

From our own land there will be today’s front runners, living legends, experienced ones, rising stars and new comers, also special projects. All these artists will be divided into four stages with wider and more comfortable festival area.

- Jazz Museum

This year the 37th JGTC will also have a Jazz Museum. This section will give you a long (his)story of jazz from its origin, in Indonesia and of course the history of JGTC. Other than that, there will be plenty of booths if you feel hungry, thirsty or need anything, plus artistic decorations that could make your festive moment even merrier.

All said. Lots of program all the way to the D-day, where four stages with varieties of superstars, running for 12 hours straight are set to knock you out. Do you want to be a part of the 37th Jazz Goes to Campus and feel the ultimate Jazzperience? All you have to do is secure the ticket now before it’s too late and while it’s still in early bird price. A good event should be able to give more than just entertainment. It has to inspire people, contribute towards the developing process and better future, creative and innovative in making something that the audience won’t forget easily. This year’s committee understand the importance of it and have been working hard to make it happen. The clock is ticking, the countdown has begun. See you there in less than a month.

Chaseiro-Interview-Jazzuality

CHASEIRO is certainly not a new name in Indonesian music scene. Formed in 1978, The vocal group consisted of Candra Darusman (vocal, keyboard), Helmie Indrakesuma (vocal), Aswin Sastrowardoyo (vocal, guitar), Edwin Hudioro (flute), Irwan B. Indrakesuma (vocal), Rizali Indrakesuma (vocal, bass), Omen Norman Sonisontani (vocal) made an important breakthrough after they won a competition held by Radio Amigos on May 6, 1978. Soon after they appeared at the first ever Jazz Goes to Campus, a special appearance in the 70’s popular TV show Nada dan Improvisasi and the rest is history.

Chaisero’s well known for their catchy melodies  and lyrics which often made simple but close to our everyday’s life, in many times inspiring or  even come with social and politic issue. For instance, “Pemuda”, is one of their best songs, memorable, inspirational, even the lyric is still relevant for our young generation now.

Chaseiro-Retro2-Presscon-DudutSuhendraPutra (4)

More than 30 years have passed and now Chaseiro still full of spirit and energy to continue their music career. The surprise is here : Recently they released a new album named Retro 2 (buy here: http://store.jazzuality.com/product/chaseiro-retro-2/), following the first Retro released a couple of years ago which marked the return of Chaseiro in the recordings. The press conference was held on October 11, 2014 at BlackCat, Plaza Senayan, Jakarta, moderated by Bens Leo. The popular group RAN was there too as the representative of guest stars in the album. The band is 36 years old, yet they are still showing high energy and passion to craft new things in the music industry.

We had chance to know the whole process about it. They shared their stories about recording, solidarity between them after Helmie’s passed away, being in the same square circle with so many young and new musicians and the next big thing they would like to do about Chaisero’s future music. If you have some questions about what’s inside the album or why you should get a copy, this interview will reveal it all too. We met some of them at Vio Hotel Bandung. At first there were only Chandra Darusman and Omen Norman Sonisontani but later Aswin Sastrowardoyo joined the conversation.
* * *

Chaseiro-Interview-ArmanoPutranto (2)

The past three years must be hard for Chaseiro due to the passing of three friends. First Uce Hariono, then Ade Hamzah, and last year we were all shock by the passing of Helmie Indrakesuma.  How’s Chaseiro and how do you deal with it?
Of course it brings a huge impact on us. He’s a big loss for us, because Helmie brings an important role in Chaseiro’s vocal harmonization and music, and to our unity as one big family too. But life has to keep going forward. Now that he’s gone, we’re still keeping our friendship tight to his family.

He has a strong character over his voice that’s easy to distinguish in Chaseiro’s song..
Yes. In terms of vocal, Helmi is irreplaceable. We’re very sad and miss him so much. But Chaseiro is commited to keep moving forward, keep on crafting in Indonesian music industry.

It must be hard for you to realize that Helmi’s not there anymore every time you stand on stage, especially since he was already there with you from the beginning?
Yes, it’s sad to realize that he’s not there anymore. Well, why we can not sing “Shy” until now, because he sang it a lot (he actually wrote this song too in 1983-ed). But there’s no burdened feeling between the member of Chaseiro. We know we just have to keep going.

Chaseiro-Interview-MiaDamayanti (2)

Having existed for 36 years and obviously still driven by passion. With that kind of passion, surely you have some plans in mind. What’s next?
We still want to make new songs, where there’s a lot of changes over the years. We’ve been together since we were young and single, until now that we have family and kids. As we get older, we have a lot of responsibility. Musically speaking, our mission is not only about ourselves anymore, but also about the young generation.

You’ve been doing it for more than three decades. You know, the inspiring, positive message through the lyrics..
Well, those themes are still the same.. you know, about solidarity, honesty, friendship…  but we also realize that we need to keep on evolving.

One of the most important example is “Pemuda”. After all this year, the message carried by the song is still relevant. I think it can be mentioned as the most memorable one. A lot of people still enjoy listening to that song, it even appeared in the commercial nowadays.
We still don’t get it ourselves. (Chandra Darusman laughed). Maybe there’s still so many people need and looking for something so that it still feelsrelevant to a lot of people.

Chaseiro-Retro2

Now let’s talk about the most recent album of Chaseiro called Retro 2. First of all, I’m interested with the word “Retro”. Nowadays we tend to go retro almost in everyting. In the movie, photo, fashion, music and so on. Recycling something from the past to be a today’s trend… so the fact that Chaseiro uses Retro, twice in the comeback is really interesting.
Exactly. We actually mention it in the press release. We brought some of our old hits but made a fresh rearrangement. But there are new songs too. So it’s like the compilation of those hits with a new breath.

Again, this time you collaborate with a lot of guest stars, including the top ones in today’s music scene.
Yes, we work with a lot of young musicians to make Chaseiro’s music become fresher than before. This time we feature RAN, Marcell, Tompi and some other artists that have started before them like Riza Arshad, Tohpati and Uci Nurul.

So, modern element is important in Retro 2, just like the first Retro?
Yes. We’re trying to accentuate the modern elements so our content can be delivered to the youngsters.

Chaseiro-Retro2-Presscon-DudutSuhendraPutra (1)

Such as?
Well, you will hear new arrangement over the songs that you’ve probably know. Speaking of modern, there will be rap, reggae and the new composition in a group like the way RAN has been doing.

Do you guys keep your eyes on the Indonesian music references today, especially on the young and new musicians?
Of course. We listen to RAN, Tulus, Raisa, Barry Likumahuwa, also the genius one, Joey Alexander. We think he’s way better than Indra Lesmana in his age. He’s gonna be the next big thing.

Knowing that the members are scattered in different sides of the sphere, you (Chandra Darusman) in Singapore, Rizali in India and the rest in Jakarta, is it hard to keep running especially in the recording process of Retro 2?
We have to admit that it was hard. In Retro 2, all the recording process held when we were in different places. Thanks to the technology, we could take vocals, send the data, and all the recording stepped without boundaries. There are lot of tech features that can be used such as emails, dropbox feature, etc. Those facilitated us during the recording process. Since Tohpati and Tompi were busy, we actually did it too with them. We were collaborating with Tohpati and Tompi indirectly using the internet to send their vocal and guitar tracks. We even sent the payment to them by using e-banking. (laughs).

Chaseiro-Interview-ArmanoPutranto (6)

What is Chaseiro’s plan for the near future? Will there be a breakthrough or you will still go retro and serve those beauties in new style?
For the next plan, we do wish to make an album of all new songs. Chaseiro doesn’t have a plan to continue to Retro 3 after Retro 1 and Retro 2. In Retro 2 you can already listen to three of our new songs such as “Tell Me” (written by the late Helmie Indrakesuma), “Siapa Bilang” and “Pagi Hari”. Actually, we also have an interest on releasing song one by one with video clip, we compile it one by one and when it’s enough for an album, we make one.

So make one song after another, release it as a video clip? That’s interesting. But why exactly you want to make it that way?
It’s because making one full album is a lot of work and doesn’t always sell well, right? That’s why we have to think about new strategy, and that one seems good.

The messages contained in Chaseiro’s songs have a wide and universal meaning. And as far as the music goes, it seems that Chaseiro never stuck on one genre. Instead you go with whatever style, from jazz, Latin, pop to even country, often you also combine those elements. If one ask you about the genre of your music, what would you tell them?
Actually if we have to mention Chaseiro’s music in one genre, I think it’s going to be pop latin. That’s the closest element of Chaseiro. But, we also have a little jazz here and there, although it’s only mild or light. We also love to add some samba elements and other varieties of music.

Aside of Chaseiro, what do you think of Indonesian music nowadays?
We see that the Indonesian music industry has been growing much better. We see Indonesian music is always irreplaceable in its home. Although there’s certain trend such as K-Pop or Western music domination, but somehow, the Indonesian music can still keep its path towards a better direction. Our music is actually doing better  compared to the nearest neighboring countries.

Chaseiro-Interview-MiaDamayanti (4)

Last question, but probably the most important thing regarding to the new Retro 2 album. What’s interesting in this album so the music fans have to own it?
First, we renew the old concept so it’s very refreshing.
Second, there are seven guest stars, many of them are from the young generation to reach wider, younger segment.
Third, you can still listen to the works of our late friends (Helmie Indrakesuma, Uce Hariono and Ade Hamzah). Before they passed away, we still got the chance to record some materials with them. So now you can listen as if they were still alive and played with us.

and then, Chaseiro also cooperate with Indonesian Cancer Foundation (Yki-Yayasan Kanker Indonesia) with our song titled “Dara”. As a part of our CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility), our consistency in humanity and future generation, we decided to donate all the royalties of “Dara” to the research and treatment of the ladies who suffer cervical cancer. Why we chose to donate it to the cervical cancer patient? There are some reasons. One, because I don’t know why, but we found out that Chaseiro’s listeners are mostly women. And cervical cancer is one of the most medical problems that women had to deal with. So we want to help them by contributing with our music.

(Aswin who also work as an Obstetrics and gynaecology (OB/GYN) doctor explained to us that in Indonesia this type of cancer is still the biggest threat to female. It actually can be cured if detected earlier, but many people don’t realize the importance just yet).

Lastly, the unique thing about this album is ‘the behind the scene’ part itself. As we said earlier, the album process was assisted by the internet techonology, such as vocal takes in separate places, send the data and stuffs. We know that we need to keep being updated with the technology development. that can always help us to evolve better from time to time.

BragaJazzWalk04

After our Special Edition in order to support the culinary event Bragalicious (http://jazzuality.com/jazz-event-report/braga-jazz-walk-special-edition-in-a-series-of-bragalicious-the-report/), the Braga Jazz Walk is back to its regular schedule. In the upcoming 4th edition, as what we have mentioned in the previous coverage we have prepared four bands/groups in various formats and styles. Created by Jazzuality.com in full cooperation with Braga City Walk and KPH Music, Braga City Walk is ready to give you cool jazztertainment in the month of November.

Jazztertainment? Yes. It takes place at a public places, so of course, the entertainment factor is very important. But other than that, we’re also committed in pushing the jazz regeneration forward. Everyone who are interested in jazz can use the stage either to promote themselves to the society, to try the concept, to gain more experiences of playing in front of real crowds or simply just to have fun. Go ahead, the stage is all yours. An open jam session is always on in every edition to provide more chance for any musicians/singers to have a jolly good time. Put it simple, this event is for everyone.

In accordance to our mission, the Braga Jazz Walk #04 will feature a duo project and a newly formed trio and a full band consists of college students. These bands and project are still newly established, yet most of the faces behind those groups are familiar and we do know them as talented players. Some are even full with experienced, so no doubt each of these groups promise many things that may catch your attention. Who are they? Let’s take a closer look.

First, the collaborative project between keyboardist YD Navis and much younger drummer, Alman Naufal. YD Navis is the keyboardist of West Java Syndicate who’s also playing for Tesla Manaf ft Mahagotra Ganesha. And Alman, the son of senior guitarist/bassist Kanggep Kusuma, is a boy who’s clearly born to drum. You can see it from his facial expression and the amount of energy he unleashes when he’s placed behind the drum. As he’s currently learning from Elfa Zulham, from what we heard he’s improved a lot. We have featured him several times before in two different projects: with guitar (with Anjuan Julio) and then with saxophone (with Fauzan Hakim). Now as he’s teaming up with Navis, it’s interesting to see what they are going to share. Oh yes, this group is supposed to be a trio, but they just haven’t found the suitable bassist just yet. If other group would wait, they decide to keep going while still searching for the one to complete the band. YD Navis & Alman Naufal Project Duo is the name, let’s wait and see what they are going to offer.

If you’re familiar with the Bandung jazz scene, the name Ilham Septia Inda Nugraha should ring a bell. He’s still young but consider to be one of the most reliable jazz bassists in Bandung which come from the new generation. He’s still active in his group Isola Jazz but now adds another group that we feature in this edition: Etudiant.

Etudiant is a French word means Student. The band was officially established just a month ago and previously named Tiurma Tizadya Trio, taken from the name of the pianist Tiurma Tizadya Ramadhani Siregar. Sitting behind the drum for this trio is Galih Cahya Nugraha, a fine, eccentric drummer who’s actually Ilham’s compatriote in Isola Jazz. Etudiant hasn’t played that much just yet, but individually they are all young fellas with experience. A trio would already be more than enough to bring surprises, and when it comes from skillful players like this, you can expect many things.

Last but not least, there will be a band, quite big in size and still fresh (the band was born on September 27, 2014). The name is Motionvibe. From what we have seen, these guys are all energetic and never stops in spreading the cool vibe through their music, mainly built from the combination of jazz, soul and RnB. 6 boys found inside Motionvibe are Agung and Boang (vocals), Raka (drums), Edho (keyboard), Farhan (bass) and Wahyu (guitar).

Just a week ago they won a competition in Yogyakarta as a part of Festival Kebudayaan Arab Gajah Mada University (FKA UGM). Farhan, Agung and Boang went there representing the band and brought the remix of an Arabian song by adding some blues, jazz and so on. They bagged the first prize in bass and battle beatbox categories. Impresive.

Motionvibe clearly has some jazz inside. But they also has strong sense of soul, pop and RnB that makes their music easy to chew, even by the common listeners. They already have a single “Mati Rasa” which is in our opinion has big potential to achieve success in the market. For sure they will bring this song in Braga Jazz Walk. If you’re curious, be there and hear yourself. A new but promising band Motionvibe really is. Their musicality, their spirit, their passion and the way they cover up the stage remind us of a still-active legendary band also from Bandung, Kahitna. Beatbox, mouth trumpet and some other cool vocal techniques are expected to be there, since Boang has the skill to do those difficult stuffs.

Anyone up for jam session? It will be provided after the showcase, totally open for everyone. Various styles, assorted jazz, different formats and concepts can be found in Braga Jazz Walk #04. What are you waiting for? If you’re in Bandung, join us and have a jazzy good times. It’s in the historical Braga street, inside the one and only mall in that area, right on the side of the delicious cafe/resto: Giggle Box and Tokyo Connection. Mark the date and be there. Ngariung. Ngabaraga. Ngajazz.

EveningGalaJazz-KidswithCancer

As a universal language, music has uncountable purposes and can be beneficial in so many different ways. While most of people probably use music for the sake of entertainment, music actually can be used for good causes and charity. Jazz, one of the biggest, most influential and respected style of music are commonly used everywhere to raise an awareness for something the public should know of and have a certain kind of force to stand as a theme in fundraising concert.

Gala Jazz and Fine Arts - Fundraising for Kids with Cancer (1)

Based on that spirit, here’s what happened in Medan last week. YOAM (Yayasan Onkologi Anak Medan), currently headed by Rizanul Arifin of ‘Medan Bisnis’ with the support of the Vice Governor of North Sumatra, T. Erry Nuradi in cooperation with Waspada Emusic (WEM), the affiliated media-company which specialized in bringing jazz as the part of the city’s culture and art by their finest jazz group, ‘Erucakra Mahameru & C Man Band’, plus The City Hall Club (Medan’s premier private membership club located in The Aston City Hall which exists to serve and facilitate communication, exchange of ideas, interaction and camaraderie supporting the development of local industry and infrastructure including culture and arts) held a special jazz-based fundraising event intended to support kids with cancer. It’s called: Evening Gala Jazz & Fine Arts ; Fundraising for Kids with Cancer.

Rizanul said, by looking at the new and different ways to spread the awareness, this time they relied on jazz music which has become more and more accepted by the public, also fine arts including the painting/photo exhibitions and auctions. There was also fashion show to introduce the city’s most notable talents. They hope this event could raise more funds to support the medical treatments for kids with cancer. The event was attended by the city’s governments and US consul for Sumatra in Medan, Robert Ewing, as well as the donators, sponsors, medical doctors and medias.

Gala Jazz and Fine Arts - Fundraising for Kids with Cancer (3)

Opened by Rizanul and the caretakers of the foundation, the event featured jazz music performance by Erucakra Mahameru & C Man. For this charity project, the band consists of the frontman guitarist/vocalist Erucakra Mahameru, Dian (bass), Alfred (bass), Budi (keyboard), Rusfian (drum), Bryan (saxophone) and Noni, Ega & Linvia (vocals) played jazz tunes such as Miles Davis’ “So What”, “Celebration” and Indonesian famous jazz song written by Dian Pramana Putra/Deddy Dhukun and popularized for the first time by January Christy,  “Aku Ini Punya Siapa”.

Other than delivering well known songs in cool rearrangement, Erucakra & C Man also played two original compositions, “Balap Liar” (Illegal Drag Race) and “Mohax”. After that they turned to James Brown with “I Feel Good”.

Accompanying the first session of fashion show which featured original collection of designers Torang Sitorus and Erdan, Indonesian’s pop classic “Kala Cinta Menggoda”, Miles Davis’ “Jojo” and Sting’s “Englishman In New York” became their choice of songs. Not a normal song to use in fashion show, perhaps, but these songs remarkably worked very well.

Gala Jazz and Fine Arts - Fundraising for Kids with Cancer (6)

The event reached its peak when the foundation called the children with cancer to be on stage together with Medan’s Vice Governor. Together they sang famous hits like D Masiv’s “Jangan Menyerah” (Don’t Give Up), George Benson’s “The Greatest Love of All” and The Beatles’ “Come Together”. In the end these children handed flower bouquets to the Vice Governor, YOAM, WEM and the representative of the City Hall Club. This moment touched every hearts in the hall deeply.

Gala Jazz and Fine Arts - Fundraising for Kids with Cancer (9)

Along with the auctions and exhibitions, the whole evening managed to raise more than 50 million rupiah from the donators. This is what music can do, reaching more people to join the good cause by giving donations in charity programs. We realize the pain and suffering these children with cancer are enduring. It’s hard for them, it’s hard for the parents and family. Hopefully all the donations would help the children with cancer to survive and live their lives better. we certainly hope so. Look forward for more event like this. Keep fighting, kids! Never give up, we are with you in your fight for life.

Braga Jazz Walk 04

One duo project, one newly established trio, and one fast moving jazzy soul train. Yep, that was the menu of Braga Jazz Walk #04. This edition showed our goal, to accomodate the musicians in creating or crafting projects and at the same time, providing happy vibes in jazztertainment. Located at the historical site, Braga street in Bandung, the fruit of Jazzuality.com‘s cooperation with Braga City Walk and KPH Music has once again drawn good amount of people, from the musicians, the jazz fans and mall-goers. Happy to say that jazz once again penetrated the Braga atmosphere on the second Thursday of November.

Braga Jazz Walk 4 - YD Navis Alman Naufal Project Duo (7)

A project of two players opened up this edition, a showdown between keyboardist YD Nafis and much younger drummer, Alman Naufal. One important fact: this group is planned as a trio, but they just haven’t found the suitable bassist just yet. If other group would rather wait, they decide to keep going duo while still searching for the one to complete the band. Hence, temporarily they called themselves YD Nafis & Alman Naufal Project Duo.

First of all, they performed a number one hit from Nirvana, called “Smells Like Teen Spirit” with more dynamic improvisations. This duo changed the rock pattern to a brave free jazz. Next was “All The Things You Are”, a standard  that all jazz musicians should already know very well. It was composed by Jerome Kern, with lyrics written by Oscar Hammerstein II and it had been sung by countless singers including Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. Both of YD Nafis and Alman Naufal played impressively in tight teamwork. Britney Spears’ famous song “Toxic” became the last tune. They made the flirty nuance of Britney’s music disappeared and changed the nuance into a thick jazz vibe.

Braga Jazz Walk 4 - YD Navis Alman Naufal Project Duo (6)

Interesting project we should say. Alman could match the much experienced YD Nafis without any problem. YD Nafis as usual showcased the combination of skill and experience in one solid package, the way he does in West Java Syndicate or Tesla Manaf ft Mahagotra Ganesha. As for Alman, we always admire his passion and energy whenever he’s drumming. The way he tranced during his play kind of interesting to see. But now, as he’s learning with Elfa Zulham, he’s getting much better in controlling himself. Some European drumming styles seems to be one of the fruits too. They were tough in trading punches but also reflected good teamwork.

Despite of the age differences, the two players communicated nicely. They served harmonious dialogue by using their instruments. We will surely invite this team again when they aleady become trio, but hey, they are already cool even by two.

Braga Jazz Walk 4 - Etudiant (6)

The second session belong to a newly formed trio, Etudiant (French word for ‘student’). This trio consists of pianist Tiurma Tizadya Ramadhani Siregar and two personnels of Isola Jazz: Ilham Septia Inda Nugraha (bass) and Galih Cahya Nugraha (drums). We have known how fluent the boys are in doing jazz, but we have never saw Tiurma just yet. How would these boys be when there’s a lady with them, we wonder back then. Now we finally got the answer. The boys got a match, resulting one delightful pure jazz package.

They took over the stage by carrying “Night and Day” from Cole Porter by emphasizing on smooth jazz taste. Their tasty skills shone in the middle of the song. Next was a cover of Indro Hardjodikoro & the Finger’s popular song, “Andong”.  It kept the cheerful mood from the original song but served in their own way. Then, they back again bopping by bringing “Straight No Chaser” which was composed by Thelonious Monk. “My Favorite Things” became their last tune, it was filled with joyful ambience in a frame of free jazz. The everybody’s song “My Favorite Things” was enhanced by their well music cooperation as a team on stage.

Braga Jazz Walk 4 - Etudiant (7)

The trio’s still new? That’s right. But they definitely didn’t play as a beginner or newbie. Good arrangement, nicely executed. And, they way they execute the traditional jazz is charming and ellegant. Since there are not so many jazz trios anymore in Bandung, a good one like Etudiant hopefully will keep their existance. Speaking of the way the jazzed people up in Braga City Walk, they did hit the spot. Delicious… to the last crunch.

Braga Jazz Walk 4 - MotionVibe (5)

Third and final featured band was Motionvibe. Just like young, modern Kahitna with beatbox. What? That’s what our first impression when we heard their single, “Mati Rasa” for a very first time and saw their performance. Just like the previous two groups, this band of six is considerably still new. They are not even two months old just yet. But they surely move fast. They built a professional team, they established strong concept and made a strong single that we think have a big chance to win the heart of music lovers out there. They are soulful, groovy when needed, got the flavor of RnB but also has jazzpression. They are energetic and know how to have fun together with the crowds. They clearly showed how happy they were to be on stage and created that vibe throughout the venue. The players found inside Motionvibe are Agung and Boang (vocals), Raka (drums), Edho (keyboard), Farhan (bass) and Wahyu (guitar).

How many band can make prestigious achievement in its first month? Not many. But Motionvibe is one of the rares. Just two weeks ago they won a competition in Yogyakarta as a part of Festival Kebudayaan Arab Gajah Mada University (FKA UGM). Farhan, Agung and Boang went there representing the band and brought the remix of an Arabian song by adding some blues, jazz and so on. They bagged the first prize in bass and battle beatbox categories. Impressive isn’t it?

At this show, they brought an additional player on saxophone, his name is Raka. They started with a very happening song from Magic, titled “Rude” with a touch of nu-jazz, a blend of R&B, jazz and soul. A tune that was taken from Justin Timberlake’s album called “Suit and Tie” was served with  similar flavor. Their dynamic performance made the audience felt like moving their heads and feet. They took a short moment to wish the manager happy birthday complete with cake and candles.

Braga Jazz Walk 4 - MotionVibe (1)

Just as they promised earlier in their Path and Twitter, they sang the first single “Mati Rasa”. Based on the lyrics that suit the world of youngsters and the catchy melodies, this nice groovy pop song has a big chance to succeed in the market.  “Hari Ini” as the fourth song is also their own single. Again, we could feel the groovy vibe and creamy melody from these dudes. Then they sealed their performance by playing one of The Beatles’ hits, “Come Together” served spicy with rock nuance and sprinkles of funk, plus the cool beatbox by Boang.

Happy mood and positive vibes were transfered by the Motionvibe. Speaking of soulful groove with RnB and some jazz flavors, we do have some successful names from the era of Kahitna to Soulvibe for example. But we simply can’t get enough can we? Especially when a band can offer something new or unique inside the circle. Good skilled players are found in every corner and the beatbox, mouth-trumpet and other vocal works by Boang worked perfectly as an attraction. Motionvibe is promising, and we wish them all the best.

Braga Jazz Walk 4 - Jam Session (2)

We believed placing them as the final performance would help to set a good platform for jam session, and yes it was right. The heat was still on to make some musicians jumped onto the stage to have fun.  It was Erick Gabe and Guntur Satria who started it in front, pinning “Englishman in New York”.  On drums was Joe Yang of Chakraborty and Ilham stood tall once again on bass. Two piano players abused the same instrument: Nicodemus Horisson and YD Nafis. That created a unique scene in this edition’s jam.

Erick and YD Nafis left the stage but the rest carried on with Bob Marley’s “Waiting in Vain”.  Billy of Find Taste stepped up to sing the final song for the night: “Fly Me To The Moon”. Again, two players positioned themselves on piano: Nicodemus and Andre Arizky.

Braga Jazz Walk 4 - Jam Session (1)

Providing good quality of live jazz entertainment on a regular basis isn’t easy, especially when it’s about meeting the standard of public and the needs of musicians plus the regeneration and development. We will always try our best for it and try to improve in every edition. But so far we are very happy to see the response. Many fellow musicians have been visiting frequently, some of them even join the jam session. They mingle with the audience and together they form the happening crowds.

Braga Jazz Walk 4 - Foto Session

From the side of featured bands, this edition is interesting since all of them are still newly formed. But the personnels are certainly not new players. Each band is promising in their own way. So, if anyone still measures a band from how long they have been established, it has to change because based on this edition alone, newborn bands can be really surprising.

braga jazz walk 05, the trias, pangeran muda siagian, wedding mafia, nissan fortz, cantik-cantik kok panasan

That’s the recap of the Braga Jazz Walk #04. In the next edition (November 27, 2014) we will feature a rising star from Jakarta that many people thought a little brother of Tulus. He’s an Indonesian Idol 2014 alumni (top 20).  His name? Pangeran Muda Siagian. Wedding Mafia from our partner KPH Music will also be there. And don’t miss a very special performance by a trio firstly established in Ruang Putih, still famously based in there, has a lot of fans and friends and just released a new single, “Cantik-cantik Kok Panasan” (Pretty but Hot Temprered). It’s a group formerly called Trias Acoustica but now settled with The Trias. See? Plenty of cool stuffs for this month, hope you won’t miss anything. See you!

bragajazzwalk05

One project duo carrying free jazz concept, one new but highly promising jazz trio and one soul jazz full band became the highlight of the last edition, Braga Jazz Walk #04 (read the report here: http://jazzuality.com/jazz-event-report/braga-jazz-walk-04-the-report/). Happy to tell you guys that this two weekly event is improving since it was started two months ago. Well, actually since we planted the seed in the beginning of 2014 in another venue.

In the new and even better venue, we establish even more solid cooperation with the ground zero Braga City Walk and KPH Music who provides the instruments and look forward to make this event grow bigger and better. In every edition we think of providing good jazz(y) entertainment as well as pushing the jazz regeneration forward as well as establishing a friendly/homey playground for the musicians to rest their case. Either they want to promote their new works (single/album/project), try their concept, to get the media coverage or simply to gain experience of playing in front of real audience, this event would be good to use.

Since we are getting ready to present the next 5th edition, you may wonder what we will offer. Well, turns out this edition will become an edition that could surprise you. Wide coverage in genre, involving two bands from Jakarta: one is a rising star that you will hear much, much more very soon and the other one is a blues trio that gives joyful vibe while resting their case. Other than that, a group of ‘mafias’ will ‘terrorize’ you with happy tunes. They are all ready to merry the Braga Jazz Walk #05. Plus, the open jam session that invites you guys to participate in. Now, let’s dig the lineup one by one.

pangeran muda siagian, jazzuality

Pangeran Muda Siagian

A young man, still in mid 20s but has gained quite experience and held hundreds of achievements (he has no less than 200 trophies at home), including the winner of Sherina Star Kids Competition in 2000, McDonalds Kids Awards in 2002, Heartline Gospel Singing Contest (2006) and runner up of Bintang Radio Festival in Jakarta, 2005. He became the winner of talent search show produced by Trans TV “Suara Indonesia”, reached the Top 20 in Indonesian Idol 2014, performed several times at Java Jazz Festival and JakJazz and an unforgettable duet with Viky Sianipar at Rising Star concert among hundreds of shows he’s in. So many to say until we loose count. Here’s a handsome man that we predict to go big in no time. You will hear him a lot more often soon. He is Yesaya Pangeran Muda Siagian.

Other than singing, Pangeran also stands as an MC, like for example in Java Jazz Festival 2008. It wasn’t his first time tasting the prestigious festival. In 2006 he sang together with the famous vocal teacher Bertha and just a year after in 2009 he came back by proudly bringing the music of his own tribe, Batak called Toba Rumba and received great response from the crowd. In the recordings he has released a couple of albums, particularly gospel. Two gospel albums in 2009 and one Batak and a Christmas album “Colours of Christmas” in 2011. He has played all the way to Hong Kong and Macau and crowned as the Ambassador of Jakarta Musical Production Ministry.

Speaking of vocal ability, he’s really gifted. He’s an all rounder that can sing just about anything. He does pop easily, he can croon like a pro while doing jazz, he knows how to sing ethnics, even classical or soprano/seriosa singing that he has done several times. Pangeran has done some jingles for tvs and radios such as Honda, Spacy, Madurasa and Aneka Tambang. One more thing: speaking of television, he can act too. He starred the musical series “Peri Cinta dan Anak Jalanan” as the leading role as a part of the 9th Anniversary of SCTV.

As he’s preparing a single and his debut album, we are proud to have him gracing the Braga Jazz Walk stage. He’s going to perform full team with Klency Lyman Lembono (keyboard), Reinhard Woran (bass), Bernardus Ajutor Moa (guitar), Martin Julio Sutanto (drums), Mario Ruben (saxophone) and Gina Dewi (backing vocal). This should be considered a dream team. Reinhard is the bassist of Cakra Khan, Bernardus is the music director of Monita Tahalea an Gaby Idol and Gina is the runner up of Star Voices seasion 1. Let’s make something clear. If Tulus’ success has spread all over the nation, it’s about time to have a new male star with exceptional quality. Pangeran Muda Siagian is the one.

my way band, jazzuality

My Way Band

Also coming from Jakarta is a blues trio, MY WAY BAND. We met them for the first at Espose 2013 Band Auditions. At that time their delicate blues style and friendly appearance warmth the judges and committee. As our founder was one of the judges, we’ve been in touch ever since.

My Way Band was established in April 2009 based on the same vision. They want to express and develop their talent and passion to the maximum possible extent.  Wawan (guitar),  Coki (bass) and Alu (drums), three players found in this band will try everything possible to present a type of music that can be enjoyed by variety of music lovers. The core of their music is blues but they also have some other flavors here and there. We have been wanting to have them gracing our event for at least a year, but it’s just difficult to find the right time especially since our event runs on work days. We offered them again for this 5th edition and luckily they agreed to fill a slot. My Way doesn’t just play covers, they do have their own songs too. You can listen to their original songs in their Reverbnation account: http://www.reverbnation.com/mywayband.

In our mission to bring variety of styles and related genres to this event, we are proud to have this blues trio from Jakarta. From time to time we involve the roots of all modern musics aka blues into the jazz patterns, this time My Way Band from Jakarta is the representative, a cool one.

my way band, jazzuality

Wedding Mafia

As we said earlier, a gang of mafias are heading to Braga Jazz Walk for the first time. Don’t be afraid, these mafias are not criminals and won’t harm you. Instead they will ‘infiltrate’ you with good entertaining music. Wedding Mafia, that’s their name. Since there’s Wedding in the name, perhaps you need to know a little background of this group. Some wedding musicians based in KPH (Kruisnode Piano House) Music who apparently shared the same vision and mission gave birth to it.

The band’s led by the headmaster of KPH Music, Andre Simangunsong. They are fortunate to have many players inside with the same quality. For this event, Andre will bring Syafiera Prami (vocal), Ari “Black” (drums), Harist (bass), Arnaz (guitar) and Ibnu (saxophone). Claiming the ability to give satisfaction and happiness, the band can appear with all kind of styles. Pop, jazz, fusion, soul, Latins, RnB, funk, you want it, you have it.

As our trustable partner who provide the instruments in every edition, we are happy to have this solid band from KPH Music to fill up the slot. These jazzy ‘dons’ have been ‘terrorizing’ the wedding parties and events, not with guns and other weapons but with pleasuring music especially jazz. We are excited to have them. Fusion, swing and standards that are friendly to common ears? They are good at it. Come and taste their music. If you like them, maybe you can consider of hiring them for your wedding or event.

You are a musician but still have no band? Or, you have a band but have no schedule in this edition yet wish to play? You know how to play instrument or dream to sing jazz but don’t know where to go? Our open jam session can be the answer. From our own experience, this session can spread joy and bring surprises both to audience and players. No matter who you are and what genre you’re in, you can always have fun during this session.

Interesting edition isn’t it? Whether you want to play or just watching, we invite you to be a part of this Braga Jazz Walk 5th Edition. This is a community based event that allows everyone to extend and build your network with more new friends. The musicians and the event need support from you. So, while you’re supporting us, you can be entertained by our presentation. Don’t worry, it’s totally FREE. The Braga Jazz Walk #05 will run on November 27, 2014. Save the date from now and hope to see you there.

Serambi Jazz 2014: Boby Limijaya Quintchestra

SerambiJazz-BobyLimijaya-Quintchestra

The previous edition of Serambi Jazz presented a collaboration between Benny Lackner Trio and Indonesian Azfansadara Karim and Johanes Radianto held twice: in Bandung (October 15,2014,  http://jazzuality.com/jazz-event-report/serambi-jazz-2014-benny-lackner-trio-ft-azfansadra-karim-and-johanes-radianto-the-report/) and Jakarta (October 16, 2014). Since Serambi Jazz is a two monthly program, another episode is ready to launch in the first week of December. As the last edition was very special, one may wonder who will be placed under the spotlight and what concept will he bring. The answer is here. To close the 5th consecutive year of Serambi Jazz, the final show will feature a brilliant musician. He is a pianist, composer, arranger, music director, lecturer, producer and orchestrator (you may add a ‘creator’ too). Jazz is clearly his thing, but interestingly he always go extra miles by inventing unique and distinctive concept. He’s none other than Boby Limijaya, presenting his newest concept called BOBY LIMIJAYA QUINTCHESTRA. This concert will be held on December 4, 2014 starting 7:30 pm at GoetheHaus, Jakarta. As usual it’s presented free by Goethe Institut Jakarta.

boby limijaya, jazzuality, boby limijaya quintchestra, quintchestra

Before we take you deeper into his new Quintchestra, let us introduce you to Boby Limijaya first and his previous creations. Let’s begin with a little historical background. Boby Limijaya was born in Tangerang 34 years ago. He already showed interest not long after he was born and already played when he was still 6 years old. He graduated from Pelita Harapan University, majoring piano classical and then continued his formal education to Berklee College of Music in Boston USA with the scholarship. He took dual major in Berklee: Jazz Piano Performance and Jazz Composition.

Being a great student he grabbed Herb Pomeroy Award in 2009 for excellence in jazz composition by Berklee. His experiences gained by performing in many prestigious events such as Java Jazz Festival (2005, 2006 and 2012), JakJazz Festival (2006) besides appearances in smaller scenes. He was once the keyboardist of Andien (2004-2006), worked as the arranger for Christmas Album (2007) and the creator/music director of “Give Thanks” concert in 2006. Known as an active participant in jazz communities in Jakarta and Tangerang, nowadays he has his own orchestra, also works as an arranger and orchestrator, a lecturer and pianist plus band leader of the famous trio, B3.

From what we see, he plays jazz in wide covering area, meaning he doesn’t stuck in one particular style. He’s expressive when placed behind the piano, he conducts his orchestra like a pro. And like we said earlier, he has many ideas and knows how to cook it. His latest CD received critical acclaims, both for his unique concept and his efforts to record it. If normally a band utilizes 4 to 6 brasses, he expanded it into 8 with 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, one alto and tenor saxophones plus clarinet and flute. Calling it Boby Limijaya 8 Horns, it was neccessary for him to go all the way to Budapest. He played with Budapest Jazz Orchestra and recorded the album in there. Not a normal path to take, but the CD’s released as a beautiful package where the bop and staightahead eras all the way to 70’s jazz-rock fusion live in, plus the addition of rich multi-layered sounds created by these 8 horn players. We have written an comprehensive article about it. You can read it here: “Boby Limijaya 8 Horns with Budapest Jazz Orchestra: A Fine Jazzchestra’s Journey” (http://jazzuality.com/album-reviews/boby-limijaya-8-horns-with-budapest-jazz-orchestra-a-fine-jazzchestras-journey/). The album’s titled “Journey”. If you haven’t got it yet, you can order it to us via this link : http://store.jazzuality.com/product/boby-limijaya-journey/.

boby limijaya, jazzuality, boby limijaya 8 horns, boby limijaya quintchestra, quintchestra

Now, let’s move on to the main subject, his new Quintchestra. What he means by Quintchestra is the combination of jazz quintet with orchestra, plus the flute and clarinet that he has used in the 8 Horns concept. “Basically I got reference from Michael Brecker Quindectet. I just want to try combining the jazz quintet concept with string orchestra and clarinet and flute.” he said. But this Michael Brecker’s 15-piece brainchild which was established in 2003 is not the only source of inspiration for Boby in giving birth to his Quintchestra. He expands his reference by listening to Metropole Orchestra and todays popular New York-based fusion band, Snarky Puppy.

If that’s already interesting, we also asked him more details about the Quintchestra. “The wide space for improvisations existed in the jazz quintet while strings orchestra supports it. But that doesn’t mean the strings are less important. There are some contrapuntal (counterpoint) elements played by the strings orchestra.” he explained. He also added that if this concept succeed, he plans to bring it into recording as his second album.

The quintet consists of Dhani Syah (piano), Teofilius Alvin Ghazalie (guitar), Indra Perkasa (contrabass), Donna Koeswinarso (saxophone) and Wahyu Prastya (drums). Add 12 strings orchestra and 2 woodwinds, there will be the total of 19 players for the December 2014’s edition of Serambi Jazz.

Many players, new concept and rich jazz sounds will become a climax for Serambi Jazz in 2014. Since it’s going to come in December, we can’t help but imagine it to be as twinkling as a multicolored lights on Christmas tree. Boby Limijaya once again surprises us. After his outstanding 8 Horns, here comes his newest, freshest concept that, as far as we know, never brought by anyone else before in Indonesia. Boby Limijaya Quintchestra is set to go as the last Serambi Jazz presentation for this year. Make sure to be a part of it. It’s time to find out how far jazz concept can be stretched out, and how proud it is to see that it comes from Indonesian artist. Mark your calendar and be there.

Wide variety of Jazz (Acoustic, ‘Complicated Pop with Jazzy vibes’ plus Blues Rock), three bands, plenty of player became the highlight of the Braga Jazz Walk #05. Plenty of smiles while serving good quality of music and lots of cheers were found inside the venue for three straight hours.

For the very first time the Braga Jazz Walk proudly presented two performers from other cities: Jakarta and Depok. We are happy with it because we do want this event to reach bands or musicians outside Bandung. If they think this event can be good for their career, becoming a reliable spot to have fun and meet the music fans in Bandung, then we’d be more than happy to welcome them. On the other hand we are working hard to make this event stand tall as an active community gathering and a familiar place to visit by anyone who need a free but good quality jazz-based event. Together with the venue Braga City Walk and KPH Music plus many musicians who have been supporting us, we believe it can happen.

braga jazz walk 5 - ekustik (2)

The first session was supposed to be the band with funny name, Wedding Mafia. But alas, they couldn’t make it. The KPH Music where Wedding Mafia based on sent a cool acoustic representative in trio format by the name of E-kustik. Consists of Hannamasa (vocal), Egi Khatulistiwa (guitar) and Ibnu Ninoy (saxophone), E-kustik started with Rihanna’s hit “Umbrella” and then went a couple of decades back with Toto’s “Georgy Porgy”. They slowed down a bit with Ariana Grande song, “Almost Is Never Enough” but then went funky again with “Come Together”.

braga jazz walk 5 - ekustik (7)

Just simple but beautiful renditions flew out from the stage to the audience. Light soulful jazz would surely entertain wide segment of audience at anytime. We have invited Wedding Mafia twice but they failed to fulfill, but what’s good is that they sent the replacements which were all cool. Speaking of acoustic trio, the combination of acoustic guitar, saxophone and vocal like this added more colors to our stage. Unusual but works very well. In the hands of three capable players it sounds even better.

Braga Jazz Walk 05 - Pangeran Muda Siagian (3)

Next was a rising star from Jakarta. We believe he is the next Tulus, based on the strong character, ability and all the gifts he got from Above. He is a handsome, smiley young man named Yesaya Pangeran Muda Siagian. Though he’s still young, actually he has achieved no less than 200 achievements throughout his career. The prestigious Java Jazz Festival and JakJazz are just a few of the event that he’s in. He has performed in Hong Kong and Macau and crowned as the Ambassador of Jakarta Musical Production Ministry. Speaking of competition, he won the Sherina Star Kids Competition in 2000, McDonalds Kids Awards in 2002, Heartline Gospel Singing Contest (2006), the winner of talent search show produced by Trans TV “Suara Indonesia” and runner up of Bintang Radio Festival in Jakarta, 2005. This year he reached the Top 20 in Indonesian Idol 2014. Not enough? Well, he starred the musical series “Peri Cinta dan Anak Jalanan” as the leading role as a part of the 9th Anniversary of SCTV. His voice was heard in some jingles for tvs and radios such as Honda, Spacy, Madurasa and Aneka Tambang. Recordings? Check. He has released a couple of albums, particularly gospel. Two gospel albums in 2009, one Batak and one Christmas album “Colours of Christmas” in 2011 listed in his portfolio. What a shining resume, amazingly achieved before he even reaches 30 years of age.

Braga Jazz Walk 05 - Pangeran Muda Siagian (1)

With those illustrious backgrounds in many styles he’s been at, how does Pangeran describe his music? “I like to call it “Complicated Pop”, he says. Complicated? “Yes, because I like everything. I like Soimah (Soimah Pancawati, a presenter, singer, sinden, comedian) but also, all the way to Amy Winehouse.” he giggles. From Soimah to Amy, the range is very wide. That’s where the word ‘complicated’ came from. Anyway, you don’t have to feel complicated too with his music, because his music actually is made easy to love by everyone. No complexity, no puzzling melodies,

We’re proud to have him performed full team with an all-star cast, including Klency Lyman Lembono (keyboard), Reinhard Woran (bass), Bernardus Ajutor Moa (guitar), Martin Julio Sutanto (drums), Mario Ruben (saxophone) plus Gina Dewi and Tito (backing vocals). This should be considered a dream team. Reinhard is the bassist of Cakra Khan, Bernardus is the music director of Monita Tahalea an Gaby Idol and Gina is the runner up of Star Voices seasion 1. Great lineup to back a very gifted talent, the result was fun-tastic.

Like a magnet he dragged mall-goers to him, joining the medias and attending fans who already sat and stood around the stage. Pangeran started with a hit of Reza, “Satu yang Tak Bisa Lepas” that brought him round of applause. Interestingly he included “Bengawan Solo” in his repertoires. For your information, he said that this song will be included in his debut solo album, projected to launch next year. Dewi Sandra’s song “I Love You” in a new jazz outfit. “Old McDonald” showed how perfect he could nail the notes and pronouncing the lyrics in super fast speed. “La La (Means I Love You)” which was already sang by many famous names like Delfonics, Jackson 5, Swing Out Sister, The Manhattan Transfer and Prince now appeared seductively romantic. Then came the last song titled “Daraku”. No doubt at all, this pop groovy song with rich melodies would do very well once being released and in our opinion has the force to place him as one of the front runners in our music industry.

Braga Jazz Walk 05 - Pangeran Muda Siagian (2)

Pangeran is an all-round singer who can sing anything very good. Either it’s soprano singing (in Indonesia called seriosa), the Batak tribe,  Pop, RnB, Soul and of course Jazz. Speaking of Jazz, Pangeran showed how jazzy he actually is at the Braga Jazz Walk for more than half an hour. Other than his wide vocal range and really nice tone, he’s got the look, he has magnetic charisma, plus he’s supported by great, great line of musicians. Simply put, he has everything needed to succeed. Mark our words, 2015 is going to be a fruitful year for him. God willing.

jam session

A jam session was served while waiting for the next band to come. We had to move it in order to keep the event on while the band did their best to reach the venue all the way from Jakarta. The session was taken by Joo Yang (drummer), Billy and Erick (vocals), Frank Navayo (guitar) and Reinhard Woran (bass). They did only one song, “Just the Two of Us”, but it was done nicely as if they were in one band.

braga jazz walk 5- my way (1)

At first we invited Bandung’s famous trio “The Trias”. But due to their tight schedule, we have to move the schedule to another edition. What The Trias plays is something called “Happy Music” where genre is not an issue anymore. We wanted to keep the ‘happy music’ concept, so we offered the empty slot to a Blues trio from Jakarta that we know very well, My Way Band. We’ve been wanting to have them in our event for almost a year, but it was just difficult to find the right time since they work in Jakarta. Luckily this time they could make it, still willing to come and perform in Bandung in working days. We have been trying to bring them in because we know they are good. Wawan (guitar/vocal), Coki (bass/vocal) and Alu (drums) are still the core. According to Wawan, they now have another guitarist, but he couldn’t come.

My Way Band started with IWan Fals’ song “Pesawat Tempurku” and then dipped us all in strong blues-presso with their original composition, “Kopi Hitam”.  A song from their second mini album “Langkah Kita” offered a strong indie taste and then they went rocking with “Tak Gendong Kemana-Mana”, a masterpiece of the late Mbah Surip. The intensity rose when they played “Rame-Rame”. Why? Because they were so playful in this one. No less than 5 genres were used in this song, such as Swingin’ Jazz, Hard Rock, Blues, Reggae and, surprise-surprise, Dangdut. Certainly a unique version presented tight. For the last song, they gave a cover of a touring member of Toto, Tony Spinner. Since the clock already went past ten, the 5th Braga Jazz Walk also reached the end.

braga jazz walk 5- my way (7)

My Way Band presented a type of music that can be enjoyed by variety of music lovers by being rooted in the mother of all modern musics. They have the confidence, their Blues playing is tasty, and they are cheerful in executing their music. Their original songs would work well in the market since they have the type of music that can be enjoyed by variety of music lovers. We are happy to finally able to bring them into the Braga Jazz Walk, and hopefully they will be able to come again in the near future.

braga jazz walk 5 - foto group

A mega star soon to be, a blues band with a twist and one acoustic trio replacing the ‘mafiosos’ from Bandung, wide variety of styles. Yes, that’s what we want! There are still many bands to invite, there are many to be updated. Let’s say if the cooperation between us, Braga City Walk and KPH Music still remain strong and carried on, there would be many things we could achieve. The jazz regeneration and development, the tight bond between players supporting one another and of course, making this event more solid and reliable as a jazz destination in Bandung. With your support, we know we can do that.

Braga Jazz Walk 5 - Titbits (1)

Many thanks for the participating bands/musicians both in showcase and open jam, the soundman, the partners and the loud crowds. Let’s keep this event alive and kicking. See you in two weeks.

37thJGTC-Jazzuality

University of Indonesia, Salemba, 1976. At that time the students of Faculty of Economics wanted to bring up series of events that covered arts in general, including theater, painting, photography and so on, including music. During that era, jazz was already labeled by many as an expensive and exclusive music by many. One of the active student at that time, young Candra Darusman, wanted to prove otherwise. He initiated an event called Jazz Goes to Campus (JGTC) in late 1976 in a mission to ensure the society that jazz could actually be enjoyed by wider segments and also very affordable. So, the first ever JGTC was held in a park in Salemba, with minimalist stage sets and ticket price only IDR 500. Apparently, it became a huge start for something historical. Today, that very event has reached the 37th edition. That’s the longest running event in Indonesia and one of the longest in the world. How can an event run that long with different committee in each year? Kudos to the Student Board of Faculty of Economics from UI (BEM-FEUI), they did it and will keep doing it.

So here’s the report of 2014 installment. As usual the event started early, around 1:00 pm at noon with selected bands in varieties. We found familiar names from last year: Sekawan and Friends. What we like to see from this band is that they give solid evidence that jazz is actually alive healthily in a small(er) city like their hometown, Salatiga. Good to see that Salatiga’s groove was back to JGTC.

37th-JGTC-RnF (1)

The Jazzperience Stage began with a four-piece band called RnF. The name stands for Room Number Five and they are rooted in soulful pop jazz. They began their journey 5 years ago with Rendy Hendrawan (vocal/guitar), Alex Zulkarnaen (bass), Bobby Abdiawan (percussions) and Fauzan Billie (drums). Their first single was released last year titled “Cinta Adalah 5″ and reached another success with “Habis Kata” from OST Hijabers in Love. Their acoustic guitar sound with groovy rhythms was nice to hear and definitely suit the taste of young listeners. After 5 years in service, RnF seems to find a steady grip. Based on what we saw, 2015 may become their best year to date.

37th-JGTC-JBFTrio

At the same time the Indosat IM3 Stage started its service with JBF Trio. You might wonder what sound would appear when  Jazz, Blues and Funk fused into one? The outcome may vary from one band to another, but one thing for sure, the music produced by this blend will make you unable to stand still. JBF, stands for Jazz Blues and Funk has the winning formula in combining these roots. We enjoyed their performance last year in the 36th JGTC and now once again we tapped our feet over their clean shots. So bluesy, so jazzy and funky at the same time. Fawdy (gitar and vokal), Soebroto (bass) and Ryan (drums) as usual demonstrated their smart brain, creativity and skills in cooking up their tasty platter. 2014 has been a great year for them. Being the winner of Jakarta Indie Music Festival (JIM Fest) that involved all kinds of genre is an evidence of their high quality. Their act in this year’s JGTC can become another proof as well.

37th-JGTC-NadoProject (1)

Nado Project opened up the Musik Asik Stage at 1:30 pm. We saw them in the Final Round of JGTC Competition when they served tight modern jazz, this time Nado, Ibnu and Nadya interestingly served experimental free jazz. Not easy to play, but full with action. SevenStrings Music School & Production used their performance in JGTC to give Tribute to 80’s and 90’s Jazz. It featured so many young talent. You’d know that a music school is good by how the students’ perform. Clearly they have done a marvelous teaching since the representatives played jazz neat and sharp.

37th-JGTC-FusionJazzCommunity (2)

Came all the way from Surabaya was a fast-growing jazz community in Surabaya which specialized in Fusion, the Fusion Jazz Community, better known as FJazzC. It was established on June 2, 2012 based on the mission to extend the jazz coverage area through fusion. Today they have 300 active members (500 if includes the inactive ones) and a regular show on local East Java tv. Other than that, they have graced many jazz events locally. An appearance at a prestigious festival like this is an important step because then they can expand the community with fusion lovers from Jakarta, Depok and beyond. Aside of that, it felt nice to have the jazz fusion shower during the hot weather. When “Billie Jean” and “September” were found among the songlist, what can be wrong?

37th-JGTC-5th-Avenue (2)

The winner of the JGTC Audition 2014 4/4 who gave a superb high class traditional jazz playing couldn’t come due to some reasons. Their session was taken by the consolation prize winner from Bandung, 5th Avenue. Chris Alfeus (guitar/vocal), Stella Inke (keyboard), AlbenOctorys (drums) and William Anthony (bass) gave a rich arrangement of fusion including some scat-singing that fell into exactly the same notes from guitar by Chris. Tjheir version of Indra Lesmana (JavaJazz)’s “Bulan Diatas Asia” was served gloriously like in the competition. And they presented some original songs too, including “Membisu”. They didn’t win the competition, but they did very well just like a champ.

37th-JGTC-ErosTjokro (2)

The runner up of JGTC Competition 2013 Job N’ Duties replace Nado Project on the Musik Asik Stage right after. The cool dudes Jeremiah, Bimo, Afirniar and Faiz demonstrated their solid jazz punch that gave them success in last year’s competition and warmed everyone who came early to this fest. On the other stage we found a young man, not a glamorous or eccentric but rather simple and humble, just like your brother with soulful voice equipped with guitar, singing the songs that you’re already familiar with. That sounds really nice doesn’t it? That’s our impression of Eros Tjokro, a rising star who has many appearance on Youtube especially the clips with some of Gruvi and HiVi! members. He gave a pleasuring package just when the heat from the sun burned our heads. He greeted the crowd with several well-known hits from other famous musicians like Justin Timberlake’s “Senorita”, “Treasure” which belongs to Bruno Mars, Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines”, and the legendary “All Night Long” originally sang by Lionel Richie.

37th-JGTC-BraytheDay (1)

Two basses (fretless and fretted), one keyboard, one synthesizer and one drum. Pretty odd formation right? But it’s the formation that made them won the heart of judges in the competition. We’re talking about Bray the Day, the runner up of this year’s audition. Using two bassists might be risky for some, but Bray the Day knows what to do with it, amazingly eventhough they were formed just about a month or even less. Speaking of sound, Nadya Sella Belansky on keyboard gave a rich variety of jazz, plus the synthesizer sounds that add more layers. This band also received the awards of Best Keyboardist and Best Bassist. Nice huh? Well, they earn it. And yes, a great round from them here at the main event. From their show, you could really feel the funk which was shown from their two bass playing.

37th-JGTC-RAN (2)

Not many of you may realize, but RAN (Rayi, Asta and Nino) has just celebrated their 8th year of togetherness. Though they have been dancing that long, they still wish to be better in painting up the industry with their music. As an evidence, their new single, the delightful acoustic that tells a story of long distance relationship “Dekat di Hati” is doing very, very well today in major radio stations all over the country. Appearing in commercial and acting in movie are another thing that they have done too. As predicted, they got enormous size of crowd. Plenty of their hits from the groovy to romantic pleasured the audience fully, including their first hit “Pandangan Pertama” and of course “Dekat di Hati”. So, after 8 years, will there be more fruitful years for them? You bet. One thing for sure, we will surely bump into them again in upcoming festivals. Their performance at JGTC undoubtedly very happening. Full of youngster who cheered, sang, and danced along with RAN’s big hits that they brought up on stage.

37th-JGTC-StoryTellers (1)

Bafty Quintet from Surabaya was the third winner of JGTC Competition. Just like 4/4, they couldn’t make it. They were replaced by the consolation prize winner, StoryTellers. Consists of UPH music students Villo (drums), Reyan (bass), Grace (keyboard) and Nico (guitar) , once again they wowed us with their strength.  Their tasty rendition of “Bulan Di Atas Asia” that wowed the judges was there again served neater. Fluent jazz playing, strong and clear intonation over good arrangement. The way they play was like telling us some stories. It was really fun to watch these guys. On the other hand, Alboni Quartet was about to meet their listeners at Nescafe stage. At first Alboni Quartet was created mainly to join last year’s JGTC Audition. But since they won it, they decided to keep the band running. Aloel, Indra, Ivan and Benny were back again gracing this event and served some standards and familiar songs in fluent jazz but with youthful spirit.

37th-JGTC-Soundscapes (1)

The name Soundscapes sounds familiar to us. Yes, we covered them at the same event last year. Consists of 9 very young personnels (aged around 17 to 20), they served colorful funky jazz. This year these boys came back again with another round of cool covers. This time they tried to do it in mellow version. Several top 40 songs were on the list, for instance, Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, Jason Mraz “Make it Mine”, Bruno Mars “Locked Out of Heaven”, Adele “Rolling in the Deep”, and “Norwegian Wood” as the opener.

37th-JGTC-HajarBlehBigBand (1)

What do you imagine when you hear Big Band? If you picturize an orchestra with members sit still with serious facial expression in your mind, you will start seeing it differently after you see this Bogor’s proud big band called the HajarBleh Big Band. Consists of young and happy musicians, they kind of change the paradigm by utilizing their membership in this big band as the playground to have lots of fun. It’s easy to find shiny, happy faces on their stage. They can shape a good looking formation, but they can go ‘messy’ on the street too like what they did in order to celebrate the International Jazz Day last year. In front of hundreds of hawkers and shoppers spectators at Pasar Baroe, Jakarta, they did a flash mob by playing Herbie Hancock’s “Chameleon” and Louis Prima’s  “Sing Sing Sing.” That suits their statement that jazz should be able to elimiate all layers found in the society and jazz is definitely for everyone. Other than that, HajarBleh Big Band clearly encorages to share the excitement big time and spread the positive vibe throughout Indonesia. Their show really boosted up the crowd because of their arrangement in pop music in big band style. Have you ever seen big band members took selfie and did high-five during performance? They did that. The group epically closed the show with Fariz RM “Barcelona” where the conductor/leader, Roberto Joko, moved forward with keytar (keyboard and guitar). Not only they played it greatly but also they made the final festive.

37th-JGTC-Balawan Trio (1)

As one of the most prominent guitar players in Indonesia, Balawan and his trio got the audience lined-up even before their show started. The light rain did not stop anyone from cheering when the band got on the stage and boy, they did not let down any single person watching it.

Balawan is known as the person who formed Batuan Ethnic Fusion, a mix of Balinese gamelan music with jazz-rock. In this performance, the ethnic colour was very bright and strongly felt, sometimes it got complicated and complex without losing the entertainment. The band showcased what they got and the energy was overwhelming. It was overall very inspiring for musicians and entertaining for the rest of the audience. Now, he surprised the listener with his voice while singing a legendary hits, “What a Wonderful World”. In order to add the blast, Balawan showed his fantastically speed and presition in playing his instrument. You see, the wizard once again did the spell.

37th-JGTC-BSO (2)

Around 4:30 pm the stage in the middle presented BSO Band Jazz Project. BSO stands for Badan Semi Otonom (Semi Autonomomous Body), established in 2001 by mostly rooted in music. This organization has made some bands, music projects, recruitments and events. They realize what music can do, therefore they set their mission to develop people through music. Just like last year they served an interesting bebop and traditional jazz, showing that this BSO does ‘speak’ jazz fluently with the right articulation. Michael Jackson “Love Never Felt So Good” boosted the crowd up as they opened the show, continued with “September”, Sandy Sondoro “Malam Biru”, BSO greatly introduced their abilities and talents to us.

37th-JGTC-KuntoAji (3)

Funny, creative, young, energetic, vibrant are the words that define Kunto Aji. His originality defines what he is, on and off stage. Very talented in music making and performing, Kunto Aji was one of the finalist of an “Idol” talent search, but we can see that he is more than an Idol: a true entertainer. He is naturally funny and there is almost no reason not to love this guy. Knowing that he plays JGTC makes us wonder if being a jazz artist is what his destination is in his musical journey, and he knows he has all the support he needs! Kunto Aji collaborated with Generasi 90, a famous project aiming to bring back all good memories about 90’s to these days. He played several longlast hits from 90’s musicians like Sheila on 7, Bening, Chrisye, Memes, ME, and his favourite group, Kahitna. Although it was the first time for Kunto Aji performing at JGTC, he already got a big crowd cheering his name and the air full of laughter and nostalgic memories of 90’s. Go Kunto!

37th-JGTC-TezaSumendra (3)

On the other stage we found Martesa Sumendra, better known as Teza Sumendra. We first heard him in American Idol season three in 2006. Then we found him again in the album “Kembali Satu”, an album made by Indra Lesmana which featured 8 Indonesian Idol alumni (2009). Again, his name appeared in Andezzz’s “Electric Lov3″. On theater stages he got role in Ali Topan The Musical and Laskar Pelangi. He’s been in Java Jazz Festival too, from 2009 to 2013. Today he’s one of the most favorite male singers among the youngsters. Look at the scene from his stage, clearly he got many fans. Having a good look might may attract girls to like him, but his unique, distinctive singing voice that sounds like a black Soul and RnB singer also spoiled one’s ears. A star in the making has landed on the JGTC ground. Teza surely know how to explore his voice in right genre and he applied into several hits like Justin Timberlake “Suit and Tie”, Beyonce “Drunken Love”, and other songs which made the girl histerically screaming. He also knew how important communication between performer and audience really is, in order to built the mood. Though it was his first time at JGTC, he successfully made first good impression.

37th-JGTC-Yemima Hutapea (3)

This inspiring young lady by the name of Yemima Hutapea set the mood just right at Musik Asik Stage. Her appearance charmed the audience, confidence was top notch. Musically? Undoubtedly beautiful. Her being a top 5 finalist of Miss Indonesia and a TV host shaped her charisma on stage. She was backed by influential musicians and her song choices and styles bring a different color to the festival.

37th-JGTC-Bonita-andthe-Hus-band (2)

Bonita with her powerful voice, Adoy the husband as the guitar player, Bharata and Jimmy in percussion and saxophone. Unusual line-up for a jazz combo, but they make it sound so full and tight! Funny how that line-up can actually produce a beautiful loud, in a very very good way. The performance was so fun and enjoyable. The distinctive, powerful and expressive vocal character of Bonita is always a catch, and the way she performs on stage is always spontaneous. She seems enjoying every performances she does that the air is filled with joyful and not to mention that Oddie Agam once mentioned Bonita as the Indonesian Aretha Franklin. Great experience, Bonita and the HusBand! Puntastic!

37th-JGTC-Like Father Like Son (1)

The father is a living legend, and the son is a legend in the making. Both of them have been contributing a lot in their own time. Both are great in skill and share the same passion according to their callings, which apparently similiar too. Father has been active for more than 50 years, while the son, well, not that long but we believe will follow his father’s footstep. Like Father, Like Son, Benny Likumahuwa and Barry Likumahuwa.

The name Like Father Like Son actually was taken from a song written long time ago by papa Benny. He told us that he couldn’t find the exact title for this song for many years. But later when Barry was in charge, finally he got it. “It’s like magic, suddenly it was all very clear.” he said. Like Father, Like Son it is, not only the song title/theme song but also the name of their bond.

It was a session that talked more than just playing jazz with skill but also a canvas where the harmony of love, respect and senses between two blood connected players being painted beautifully. Let’s not forget the role of fellow musicians including Doni Joesran (keyboard), Jordy Waelauruw (trumpet), Bass G (electric bass) and Dimas Pradipta (drums). Indra Aziz stepped forward to sing “Get Lucky” which now pinned in between funk and traditional jazz. Speaking of traditional jazz, this show brought the best of it. Slices of modern jazz was there too. A good show with good spirit like this should be able to inspire us all.

37th-JGTC-Idang Rasjidi (2)

While a 7-piece pop jazz band with a strong soulful lady on vocal Glanze did their thing with one of today’s hits, Megan Traiton “All About that bass” and “Juwita Malam among others more added their fresh performance, on the Indosat IM3 Stage Idang Rasjidi Syndicate launched their missile. It’s always nice to see Idang Rasjidi Syndicate. Why? Because then we’d see the harmony between a legendary jazz musician/true entertainer and younger players including his own sons plus Ricad Hutapea. Idang’s main weapon is piano, but he can surprise everyone with his unique voice, scat singing and any other vocal works. As we mentioned true entertainer, he always wants his show to be interactive and connected. Either he shares the story behind the song, making jokes or throws inspirational words. Well, as usual there were many things we could learn from his show. Was it entertaining? You bet.

37th-JGTC-Bandanaira (3)

Consisted of two best friends since the university days, Lea Simanjuntak and Irsa Destiwi formed Bandanaira. Lea and Irsa are both well-known in the music industry, especially jazz scene as musicians. Even though it is a duo format, they refuse to call themselves as ‘duo’ but ‘band’ instead. Bandanaira started as a project for fun, but looking at the musicality of them both, it was about time until they eventually got recognized.

They are known to always perform national anthems and traditional music of Indonesia, and that is their way to establish their uniqueness and at the same time they promote Indonesia in their way. If you’re reading this, we believe you know music is the best medium to deliver messages, and Bandanaira smartly does it in a musical way possible. The audience loved it, they sang along to the fun and entertaining performance, and the two ladies in Bandanaira was lovable that people instantly loved them. So much love as they played “Di Bawah Sinar Bulan Purnama” accompanied by Doni Sundjoyo (bass), Didiet (violin), Iwan Wiradz (percussion),  and together continually entertained the people.

37th-JGTC-Bakutindis (2)

The combination of teacher-student of Institut Musik Indonesia (IMI) The Bakutindis‘ show took place at the Musik Asik Stage. Consists of David Likumahua (guitar), Ryan Inno Centio (bass), Samuel Rusli (drums), Christofer Tjandra (guitar), Vinson Vivaldi (keyboard) and Denimaris Boy (saxophone), they served famous Indonesian songs and recent top 40, entertaining the crowds up until the sky began to get dark. Cheerfully opened with Pharell Williams “Get Lucky”, Bakutindis truly got our attention as they continued with many more songs.

37th-JGTC-OelePattiselanoQuartet-Monita (3)

Cool, calm, confidence. That’s the outside look of our own jazz guitar legend, Oele Pattiselano. But the music he brings out from his guitar is simply magic. Pure, genuine heartfelt swing is his thing. Even though he’s a master, he doesn’t like to show off, instead he keeps it simple, letting his heart pours into streaming melodies in jazz tone.

Performing under Oele Pattiselano Quartet with Arief Setiadi on sax, Dezca Anugerah Samudra on drum, and Jeffrey Tahalele on contra bass. Oele delivered a beautiful traditional jazz full of improvisation, just like watching a jam session. Monita Tahalea who was featured added more sweetness into the act. We can always learn from the masters on how to deliver a pure jazz with the exact articulation. It doesn’t always have to be complex, even the simplest one can be so beautiful if the players attach their soul to it. Monita with her beautiful voice opened the show with Kenny Rogers “It Had to be You”, also a song from Arief Setiadi, “Song for Maya”.

37th-JGTC-ESQIEF (3)

A warm, intimate and interactive show as usual belong to Syaharani and the QueenFireworks (ES:QIEF). There’s always love being transferred naturally from her to the audience that also became the title of ES:QIEF’s third album released on March, 2014: Selalu Ada Cinta (There’s Always Love). What’s unique about ES:QIEF is how liquid they are in concept. They don’t want to stick in just one genre, instead they embrace wide variety of sounds and styles. Light Jazzy, Power Pop, Acoustic, Ambiance, Lounge Dance, Groove, Blues, Soul, Rock, Bossa, the indie music, the sound of the 70’s etc, often fuse these elements into a melodic ES:QIEF signature along with the simple ‘slice of life’ lyrics. Founded by three pillars: Syaharani, Donny Suhendra and Didit Saad, the band has been contributing in countless events all over the nation. It’s good to see them again gracing the Jazz Goes to Campus, which is actually not a new place to them. Two of the three founders (Didit wasn’t there since he had to play somewhere else) treated their fans with several songs from their newest album along with Kristian Dharma (bass), Fajar Trias and Andi Gomez (keyboard) and Sirhan Bahasuan (drums). “Arisan Hujan” is a song inspired by a beautiful poem from Syaharani’s beloved friend and they closed with “Morning Coffee”. As Syaharani said, a song can tell beyond the reality because imagination is wild and wide, and yes indeed it was a sweet Sunday where we all felt ease at home.

37th-JGTC-Monita Tahalea (2)

At the Jazzperience Stage we spotted Monita Tahalea & The Nightingales when the sky began to go darker. Led by the beautiful singer with lushy vocal Monita Tahalea, this group has very, very talented male players including Indra Perkasa (bass), Yoseph Sitompul (piano), Ricard Hutapea (flute & sax), Gerald Hiras Situmorang (guitar) and Jessi Mates (drums). There was a new song made by Monita and Gerald found among the repertoires, the song’s called “Memulai Kembali” (“Starting Again”), an easy to love mid tempo folkish pop jazz that suits all kind of listeners. A little info: Nightingale is a singing bird with peaceful and calm sound, it’s a perfect choice for Monita to choose this name since she also breathes the same soul. Sweet, charming and relaxing show courtesy of a gang of young but very talented players. For JGTC this year, Monita specially sang some songs were once popularized by our legendary musician, Chrisye. “Dibatas Mimpi” became the opening song, then continued with “Serasa”, and “Kala Cinta Menggoda”.

37th-JGTC-TributetoSalemba(9)

A historical moment happened in this year’s installment. Since most of us were not present at the very first one in the second half of 70’s, perhaps you might wonder how it was back then. Well, that’s the interesting part of this session, because at this edition JGTC wished to bring us back to feel it by inviting some of the living legends who performed at JGTC numero uno. Standing as the music director was Benny Likumahuwa (trombone). Joining him was the initiator of JGTC Candra Darusman (piano), Abadi Soesman (keyboard), Benny Mustafa (drums), Iwang Gumiwang (percussion), AS Mates (bass), Rien Djamain (vocals) and a drummer who didn’t play at that time but also a senior musician and important name in our jazz history, Eddy Syakroni. The project’s called: JGTC Project Tribute To Salemba.

In a mission to reminisce all the memories from the first JGTC at Salemba in mid 70s, this project brought back all the glory, beauty and spirit of how it was back then. The artists in this session are not young anymore, yet they still have the energy just like 1976. There’s a little twist: if in 1976 Benny Likumahuwa (with Bubi Chen, Jack Lesmana, Maryono and Jacky Pattiselano) played the traditional jazz, this time with the appearance of Abadi Soesman and Candra Darusman, a little rock was felt here and there. For us, watching them together gave goosebumps. Not only we felt happy to see them all healthy, happy and technically awesome, but this project is also very important in terms of our jazz history. Finally we could take a peek of what happened in Salemba 38 years ago presented by these living legends. Benny Mustafa who recently recovered from sickness surprisingly performed really well and energetic. His love for music was truly seen and this is something we can learn from him. Passion wins it all. Other than that, it was nice to hear Chaesiro’s hit “Ku Lama Menanti” sang by Rien Djamain. We hope to see more, may this project be carried on with more names next year.

37th-JGTC-RayHarris-FusionExperience (5)

We enjoyed his performance back in JakJazz 2008. For us it was like an unforgettable performance. Good fusion with the real spirit, executed sharp and clean, very dynamic and in many parts, wild, and served chilled with lots of fun. We have been waiting for them to come back again, now the Jazz Goes to Campus made it happen. Yes, we’re talking about the fusion band from Glasgow, Scotland founded in 2007, the Ray Harris & the Fusion Experience. What they play is the amalgam of great music across ages, like a time tunnel but in one dimension. Contemporary but still embracing the traditional, modern yet utilizing vintage elements. And what’s also good about them is that their music can satisfy rock, soul, blues and of course jazz fans, including the common listeners.

Another thing that you have to know is that they are not stranger to Indonesian music soil. Other than the previous gigs in here, their album can also be found in the market distributed by DeMajors. The album is available at our online store: http://store.jazzuality.com/product/ray-harris-live-impressions/. Just like what we mentioned 6 years ago, the way Mr Raymond Harris play the keyboard kind of reminds us of The Doors’ Ray Manzarek in present time. Once again they stunned us with their funky formula, and clearly the audience loved what they played too based on what we saw. Intense, high octane action and joyful. Plenty of wild attraction too served from Ray. Another unforgettable one from them. Wicked! For this time Ray Harris collaborated with an Indonesian singer named Marcelia Lesar as vocalist in three beautiful songs. Another collaboration also happened between Ray and Hannabiel, an American percussion player and saxophonist, who recently resides in England. Tonight she played percussion along with the band.

37th-JGTC-TjutNjakDeviana (4)

How would jazz sound in the hands of a professor? Well, we actually know how incredible it would be since we have seen this professor’s gigs many times. Tjut Njak Deviana Daudsjah was born in Indonesia but she studied in Germany and pursued her career there for some decades. One of the most successful one when she was there was a female jazz trio that reigned all over Europe during 1990 to 1993. She came back to Indonesia and established the Institut Musik Daya Indonesia which adopts international curriculum in their education system but still holding tight to keep our own cultures and all its values. She gives birth to many successful musicians and listed as one of the most dedicated names in Indonesian jazz history.

Everytime we watch her, we can always feel her jazzy heart. Being a professor and a highly experienced jazz player doesn’t make her music sounds difficult. She often takes folk, children songs and evergreens from her own land and crafts them effortlessly beautiful. At this 37th JGTC edition she performed under Tjut Njak Deviana & Friends. Madame professor ‘und Freunde’ gave such a beautiful, heartfelt and connected session that would surely make the audience fall in love with jazz. She played around folk songs from various area of Indonesia like Maluku and Minahasa.

37th-JGTC-AdhitiaSofyan (3)

Imagine a romantic man sits alone in his bedroom, picking up his guitar and starts pouring some notes along with singing. Honest but poetic lyrics written in simple way, melodious streaming notes which you can learn to play too. Well, Adhitia Sofyan got his success starting with this concept. Three albums were made under “Bedroom Recordings” concept and reached success: “Quiet Down” (Vol 1), Forget Your Plans” (Vol 2) and “How to Stop Time” (Vol 3). What’s unique is, while the albums are available in the shape of CDs, the fans could also download them for free, provided directly by himself. While performing, Adhitia likes to bring some more players to accompany him. Eventhough he plays as a team, his cozy acoustic bedroom concept is still kept. An inspiring man with tender but manly voice, good in playing guitar and making songs, what’s not to love from him. While the girls melt, the boys can learn how to be romantic from him, the least.

37th-JGTC-Sondre-Lerche (5)

Sondre Lerche has a very strong fan base here in Indonesia. Even though they visited Indonesia just a year ago for a jazz festival in Bandung, the fans seemed to eagerly expect to see them live. Sondre is famous for his songs “Two Way Monologue”, “Sleep On Needless”, and he also wrote some original soundtracks for drama movie like Dan In Real Life.

Sondre Lerche is a versatile musician: He studied classical guitar and explored bossa nova, psychedelic, and even 60’s pop. Yeah, now we know where the distinguished sound in his music came from. As a recording musician, he is also a productive one. He just released his album “Please” this year, which songs were also performed in this festival. A little bit about Please, Sondre is reaching out through this album. He went out of his usual zone, infusing indie-rock scratching with a ballroom-blues glaze, and JGTC is blessed to be performed some of his latest work.

How about his performance? It was romantic in a kind of break-up way. Bittersweet, haunting, beautiful, but also out of this world. As it was a part of his Please Tour, Lerche’s song list was dominated with new songs. “Lucifer”, “Airport Taxi Reception”, “Like Lazenby”, and his hit “Two Way Monologue” were some of them where he performed solo. He added some surprise to the show where he collaborated with Soundscapes in “Everyone’s Rooting for You”. The ‘zoning out’ moment was there, leaving the audience in a long awe. Definitely something we rarely see in any live performance of anyone. At the same time, Sondre Lerche with his expertise spoiled the audience by playing some of his most popular tunes and get them to sing along. Such a treat in a perfect day in University Indonesia, where Jazz Goes To Campus was held at.

Proud to say we could got the answer for our curiosity about the reason why Sondre Lerche love to keep coming back to our beloved country, Indonesia and he mostly performed at jazz event although he is not known as jazz musician. He explained to us the reason behind it is because a lot of Indonesian jazz festivals wish him to be here and he takes it as an honour. Although Sondre Lerche is not known well as jazz musician and has no training in it, but actually he grew up within jazz. He already listened to “Night and Day” when he was 8 and he still fall in love with that song until now. “I like jazz music, I like the freedom you can get in jazz, I like improvisation, I like experimentation, and sometimes those are found more in jazz music than pop”, said Sondre in order to satisfy our question about his relation with jazz.

37th-JGTC-TheGroove (5)

17 years and still running, with even more loyal fans behind? For us it’s a great achievement. It’s The Groove. Imagine this: they have been grooving the stages including those who were built in the campus grounds for that long. Nothing change at all: they always make the audience happy not only with their music but also with their lively performance. Throughout the years the personnel show strong family spirit. Their soul, funk, disco with jazz taste is ageless. Rieka Roslan and Reza (vokal), Yuke Sampurna (bass), Ali Akbar (piano), Rejoz (perkusi), Deta (drum), Arie (guitar) and Tanto (keyboard) amazingly proved that even the songs they wrote more than a decade ago still perfectly suitable for this generation, while the new singles like “Let’s Go (Reunian)” and “Kusambut Hadirumu” are made with the exact The Groove flavors but fit the currend trend at the same time. Happy stage with happy people, both the performers and the crowds. We always love the scene from their show, and surely we will see them again as one of the main treat at many upcoming festivals. “Bagaimana bisa”, “Khayalan”, “Dahulu”

37th-JGTC-Tulus (5)

And now, ladies and gentlemen, here’s the phenomenal man. Once again, Tulus created an unbelievable view on his show. Like a magnet, he dragged everyone in the venue, making his concert area overload again just like last year. Two albums with phenomenal success, plenty of mega hits, lots of appearances everywhere and some prestigious achievements/awards. He held his second solo concert in Bandung just a couple of months ago with about 3500 fans watching. In just a few days Tulus will make his grand Konser Gajah in Jakarta (December 2, 2014) at Kartika Expo Center, Balai Kartini Jakarta, aiming no less than 5000 audience. But before that, he landed first on 37th JGTC. Several years ago he was still a talented young man trying to make his way to the industry, today he’s on top of the game.

What’s good about Tulus is that he knows how to show his passion in jazz without having to go too hard in it. He has some bop and swing in his albums, but he goes wide across borders, embracing pop acoustics, ballads, folk, doo woop and Motown soul. In his concert/show, he likes to combine the original and new arrangements, making his act feels fresh yet familiar. At this year’s edition Tulus was supported by his full team including Fuad Rudyan (drums), Sindhu Banyusekti (bass), Ferry Nurhayat (synthesizer), Anto Arief (guitar) and Yonathan Godjali (keyboard).  He cheered everyone with his numerous hits from both albums. Though 2014 was not his first experience at JGTC, but every year is different experience for Tulus. While last year he was still tried to make his songs familiar, this year Tulus got his audiences sang along with him in whole song list. Another huge success for Tulus and JGTC. We still amazed by the number of audience and how loud they were during the show. He said he wished to be a part of the music history in Indonesia and the world, he already is now. His success would be difficult to follow by others, and his number of audience is always beyond believe. Magnificent.

37th-JGTC-GlennFredly (4)

We were happily exhausted, but the JGTC still got one final act. It’s Glenn Fredly, the man who establishes himself as an indie artist but somehow still gain popularities like a commercial major ones. That means, his fans accept his new idelism and support his mission: Prosperity, Love and Peace. That makes his show both entertaining and important, especially when he meets the young campus generation like this. Glenn along with his fellows which are Nicky Manuputty who stroke us with his sax attack, Rayendra Sunito who provided us with his rich bit, and Bonar Abraham who gave funky rhythm on bass, all at once lively closed this event. He’s great in doing ballads, he can bring in happy feet. He can cheer everyone, he can send the positive messages and reminders. He’s digging more of the entertainment world to spread his message like movies too, or look at the way he shows his care of saving one of the biggest labels in Indonesian history, the Lokananta. Well, Glenn Fredly is a man on a mission. Isn’t it inspiring when we see a big artist uses every chance he has in his life to do something good? Glenn definitely realizes that. And for that, we salute him.

Like the previous editions, there were so many things to catch for almost 12 hours straight. Almost 40 performances and hundreds of artists from Indonesia and far away lands were spread over 4 stages. What a surprise to see this festival free from rain all the way to the end. Seems like the number of audience wasn’t as much as last year, but it was still totally happening. Some stages got good number of crowds even at the early hours.

37th-JGTC-Titbits (7)

As one of the oldest jazz festivals in the world, Jazz Goes to Campus successfully maintain its existance among so many other younger events. The fact that it’s been held in campus ground since the first one shows that jazz has been living inside the students’ hearts for decades too. For this year, the selection of artists reflected the variety of jazz quite enough. We found all kind of jazz, from traditional to modern, from swing to pop, from fusion to free jazz and experimental. Not just the famous names, variety is  an important subject in creating a festival. That will give the audience better access to find the kind of jazz that suits them the most.

The JGTC Choice Awards were given to artists who have given much impact towards the jazz development along with their shiny achievements. Tesla Manaf from Bandung who is soon going to have his album released internationally by MoonJune Records proudly received the award as Newcomer Artist. Is he new in this business? Definitely no. But he’s making a lot of breakthrough for the past couple of years, so for us he earns this prestigious award, not as a newcomer in Indonesia but a newcomer in the world who soon will stand among the giants.

We extend our appreciation to the committee from BEM FEUI for all their hardwork to make this edition once again a success. What or how will it be in 2015? Let’s wait and hope for the best. Thanks JGTC, we loved it. Keep the jazz spirit alive.

BragaJazzWalk06

The 6th Braga Jazz Walk is right around the corner. If last year we featured the soon-to-be mega star, a twisted Blues band and an acoustic trio, this time we have prepared a fresh batch which involve a student Jazz band, a cool male rising star that can sing and play piano at the same time, and a Jazz band tributing a late legend and his group. As usual, the event is totally free. Interested? Roll the dice, here we go.

First, let’s talk about Joe Sample. The world of jazz mourned when he passed away last September due to lung cancer at the age of 75. We still remember his awesome performance at the Java Jazz Festival year 2008, we enjoy his solo albums and a couple of collaboration albums like with Randy Crawford (“Feeling Good”) and Lalah Hathaway (“The Song Lives On”), and of course his legendary band, the long-time running The Jazz Crusaders or just The Crusaders. The Crusaders is known as a unit where Jazz, Soul, Pop and Funk live harmoniously and nutriciously. Other than being a master of Funk, Joe Sample is great since he had distinctive playing style. He could go wild, but when he went smooth, it felt relaxing like Sunday morning. It’s been three months after his passing, we decided to give a tribute to Mr Sample and The Crusaders. For this, Chakraborty is the band in charge.

chakraborty, jazzuality

Chakraborty was officially established at Aru Studio in Bandung in 2013. The band consists of Venche Music School (VMS)’s students and often supported by sessionists from other music schools. Said to be rooted in traditional American Jazz, they play wide to cover most of the big jazz corners from Swing, Cool Jazz, Fusion, Blues Jazz all the way to Bossanova.

If you still don’t know about the meaning of the name, The band is led by a fine young drummer named Joo Yang with other players such as Adya Amru Hidayat (guitar), Ayu Sara (vocal), Yosua Setiawan (bass) and Nicodemus Horisson (keyboard). Recently they seem to make great moves by getting more and more gigs, including some big catches like Tangsel Jazz Festival 2014 and JakJazz 2014. We have featured them a couple of times but this is going to be the first time for them to bring a special tribute at Braga Jazz Walk. What song will they choose? How will they do it? If you are a fan of Joe Sample, The Crusaders or simply a soulful jazz funk, just come to the show.

andre arizky, rising star indonesia, jazzuality

Fancy a man singing and playing piano all by himself? Then there will be a perfect session for you in this edition. Andre Arizky is the one to do it. We got to know him for the first time when he was one of the Blues band, Royal Flush about three years ago. From there, this Law student of Padjadjaran University showed more and more passion to music. From 2010 to 2011 he acted as the head of Music Division in his faculty.

Then he rose to fame as the contestant of Rising Star Indonesia Live Audition and Duels (Top 36 Wall Riser). He was seen on TV and got his own fans, respectively. He is also one of the top 40 contestant of StarVoices Season 3 contestant. If in last edition we featured a soon-to-be mega star, Andre Arizky is heading towards the same direction. He started playing piano at 5 years old, he might have sung too by then. As Andre draws influences from Elton John, Peter Cetera and Sandhy Sondoro, you can expect him to choose some of the songs from those names, especially from Elton John who also sings when playing piano. For the first time in Braga Jazz Walk there will be a young man to take this move. A one man show by singer-pianist, and it’s Andre Arizky? Man, we have no doubt it’s going to be cool.

nouveau, jazzuality

The last one to mention is a band from Telkom University Bandung called Nouveau. Starting from a collaborative project of several bands, they decided to make a solid group. While they were trying to find a steady ground they had to go through many changes especially on the lineup. Due to this reason, they dropped the word ‘Project’ and use only Nouveau as the name. The personnels are Fachmi Satriyo Yogaswara (vocal), Camelia Yunitasari (vocal), Wiim Bahar Maulana (guitar), David Winalda (guitar) and Mohamad Naufal Ihsan (bass). More about the past members, eventhough they have quit the band, interestingly they still support the band, either as the additional players or crews. Nouveau is rooted in pop jazz, but they have the soulful taste too especially from Fachmi’s voice. This young fella reminds us of Matthew Sayersz and the likes.

As usual, jam session will be provided for you who want to have some fun on stage. It’s open for anyone interested. Bring your best gear and jump in. It doesn’t matter if you’re not a jazz musician, because you can always start right here in this event.

The Braga Jazz Walk #06 will be held on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at the Braga City Walk, on the right side of Giggle Box on the ground floor. A singing pianist, a soulful jazz band from Telkom and one special tribute to Joe Sample and the (Jazz) Crusaders are the highlight. Braga Jazz Walk is brought to you by Jazzuality.com in full cooperation with Braga City Walk and KPH Music every 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month. This is a community event which need your support, while at the same time we try our best to treat you with fun jazztertainment. Hope to see you there.

JAzzKotaTua-InfoJazzuality

Jazz was born in America, but enjoyed worldwide. Jazz belongs to the entire world and is an integrated part of world’s history. That means, having a jazz festival inside a historical site should be an excellent choice. Right at the end of this week, a new jazz festival will be born, taking place at the historical Kota Tua (Old Town) area of Jakarta. The name of the festival is JAZZ @ KOTA TUA, Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Taman Fatahillah, Museum Sejarah Jakarta starting from early in the morning to late at night. And yes, it’s FREE!

If you visit Jakarta, you should visit this particular location. Kota Tua is also known as Old Jakarta or Old/Oud Batavia, a small area that still preserves the reminiscence of the city during colonial times in the 16th century. It was once the administrative headquarters of the Dutch East India Company and a trading port. Some places of interest include the Maritime Museum, the Fine Art and Ceramic Museum, Wayang Museum which periodically showcases shadow puppetry and of course the Fatahillah Square, where The Fatahillah Museum (also familiar as the Jakarta History Museum) has been standing tall against the time. This building was built in 1620 as the Stadhuis of Batavia by Jan Pieterzoen Coen and then rebuilt in 1710. Other than being the Stadhuis of the Dutch East India Company, it’s also used as a Courthouse, Civil Registration Office, the sermon, House of Sunday worship and City Council (College van Scheppen).

The Fatahillah Museum has around 23.500 objects including the Jagur Cannon, the prison of Untung Suropati and Pangeran Diponegoro, the painting of Dutch East India’s governor all the way to some prehistorical stuffs. Another history’s added by the appearance of Jazz @ Kota Tua.

dwiki dharmawan, jazz at kota tua, jazzuality

It was Dwiki Dharmawan who had the idea. He thought about it around 8 years ago, but he got no positive reply from the related authorities at that time. But suddenly he was asked to make it happen. In just a short time Dwiki collected everything and everyone. He makes sure the audience to enjoy variety of performers, from the jazz masters to the newcomers, from local to international jazz artists, from rag time to modern jazz, from standards to ethnics. Assorted artistic jazz will be served in the artistic representative of Jakarta in some centuries ago. How cool is that.

Hundreds of musicians divided into more than twenty acts will run on two stages, plus one sharing session/talkshow with the CEO/Founder of MoonJune Records. Leonardo Pavkovic. Leo believes that Indonesia is the next big music country in the world. He has been keeping his eyes on our local scene and so far has recruited almost 10 bands from Indonesia (still counting). Currently he’s promoting the IndoJazzia, a division of Leonardo The Vinci Entertainment with Arlo Hennings in charge as the chief operational activities in Indonesia.

MoonJune proudly presents many of its talents too in this festival. The latest recruit is this festival’s initiator and director, Dwiki Dharmawan. For this fest Dwiki is going to bring two of his sensational legendary groups: the Krakatau-Ethno and Dwiki Dharmawan World Peace Orchestra. The Krakatau-Ethno is the version that embraces the ethnic music, specify in Sundanese (West Java) traditions. The ensemble utilizes the micro-tonal system of ancient gamelan musical structures that is based on S’lendro scale. About the World Peace Orchestra, well, this is beyond believe. Think of this: an orchestra comprising of musicians from around the world. If all members are present, it would resemble a ‘World Music Union’. No gap, no differences, just peace, love and respect to one another. The participants came from USA, China, Japan, Australia, European countries, Malaysia and Indonesia, including traditional musicians from Java to North Sumatra. Wide diversity of backgrounds, instruments and styles. Since it was quite impossible for them to gather in the studio, the recording process took place in various countries. The phenomenal mega project is simply called Dwiki Dharmawan & The World Peace Orchestra.

jazz at kota tua, jazzuality

In this festival, the World Peace Orchestra will be carried by a smaller ensemble yet still reflects the spirit perfectly by multi-national musicians. First, Beledo. Often considered as a real myth among Uruguayan music connoisseurs, the guitar hero Beledo plays with the proficiency of a man that has been sharing life with his instruments for some decades. He was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, but he is a New York based musician and composer. Other than standing as a guitar hero, he is also a prominent pianist. His music lies in between Jazz and Rock with some touches of exotic Spanish-flavored melodies, polyrhytmic rhythms and some other diversely stylish sound. This MoonJune artist isn’t far from Indonesian Jazz. As he is listed as one of the MoonJune Records’ artists, he has collaborated with the cross ethno-progressive ensemble simakDialog, with its pianist Riza Arshad and guitarist Tohpati in 2013, also as a duo with guitarist Dewa Budjana and recorded with Indonesia’s Jazz icon, the one and only Dwiki Dharmawan.

Also joining the World Peace Orchestra is Dale Barlow. The legendary composer/musician from the land of Oz is back again to Indonesia. He is a multi-instrumentalist who plays especially the saxophone and flute. As one of Australia’s most accomplished and internationally recognized Jazz artists, he has played with uncountable who’s who in the Jazz scene, even once joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in the 1980s, including several albums with his compositions. He was also a member of The Cedar Walton Quartet. After his shiny appearance in Ubud Village Jazz Festival, he’s ready to grace this fest as one of the WPO team. The kind-hearted and highly respected percussionist Steve Thornton is one of the catch in this act too.

Dewa Budjana and Tesla Manaf are the other names from MoonJune listed in the lineup. Coming from different generations, both players are amazing artistes who should be listed in the world’s greatest guitarist. They will perform under quartet formation. One more MoonJune representative is the cross ethno-progressive ensemble simakDialog. Led by Riza Arshad, this group has gained so many critical acclaims worldwide. Also found on board are Tohpati (guitar), Adhitya Pratama/Rudy Zulkarnaen (bass), Endang Ramdan and Cucu Kurnia (kendangs) and Erlan Suwardana (metal toys). Watch them to see how the using of kendangs as a replacement of drums could open a new musical dimension.

The last to mention from MoonJune is LIGRO. Agam Hamzah (electric/acoustic guitar), Adi Darmawan (electric bass) and Gusti Hendy (drums) succesfully create the mind-bending musical concept wonder since 2004. They give something unusual and might never been or seldom explored by others. They are powerful, chaotic, in some parts can be derange, provocative and even able to deliver some terrors within their music, yet they create lovely harmony.

Bassist Chaka Priambudi and vocalist Nesia Ardi established LANTUN Orchestra to (re)introduce the richness of Indonesian traditional music especially the Batavian like keroncong, tanjidor and the likes. But what’s unique, in order to bring it they use jazz elements not only in notations but also improvisations, solo runs and call & response. “We’re searching for the similiarities between jazz and Indonesian traditional music especially the Batavian, and that’s important because we need to preserve our own cultural heritage and keep deveoping it under today’s condition.” said Chaka proudly. Lantun Orchestra proves that there are still many music corners to explore with limitless possibilities. They also brilliantly shows that jazz can be used to preserve our own traditional music, and for us, Lantun Orchestra is considered as one of the most interesting new concept at present time. Intan Soekotjo, the proud daughter of legendary keroncong singer Sundari Soekotjo who once made surprise with her keroncong rendition of “Over the Rainbow” is featured in this act.

Two ladies with the music that symbolizes the beauty and everything that’s 100% Indonesia, Lea Simajuntak and Irsa Destiwi as Bandanaira are in the lineup as well. With the sweet rearrangement of some Indonesian classics and anthems served by top notch vocal technique which appears as the combination of ‘soprano’ and pop, they will give you something nice and easy to chew yet classy. The ‘girl-power’ will also shine from a group of five named Ina Ladies. Senior singer and trumpeter Happy Pretty (she’s the youngest of the legendary Pretty Sisters) led the team consists of Bonita (vocal, harmonica, guitar), Metta Legita (pianist) and two Starlite members: Sheila Permatasaka (bass) and Jeane ‘Alsa’ Phialsa (drums). You will never underestimate the power of ladies anymore after watching them. Presenting the traditional music of Atjeh is Keubitbit. Formed by young musicians, this band plays songs with genuine traditional Atjehnese nuance in progressive fusion corridor.
